Double height kitchen extractor.

Our kitchen extractor works brilliantly but we are about to add a second storey giving us a double height kitchen. I’m assuming that using the same extractor on the higher ceiling will not give nearly enough draw - I’d happily be corrected on this. Options seem to be downdraft extractor housed within the island (losing cupboard space) either vented outside or recirculating. Other possibility is an extractor housed on the external wall somewhere near the oven housing (about 2m away). Any other options or views on the ones I’ve mentioned would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Nice kitchen. You seem to have all the options on the table. It really depends on how you cook. We often put the higher powered fan in the room elsewhere to satisfy building regulations and then put provision for a recycling unit in the ceiling incase that isn't enough, but we have never had a call back to fit the localized extract. How often do you put the extractor on and what are you cooking at the time?

I'm sorry to say that you would be throwing good money after bad. The type of extractor you've linked to is a bathroom model. These gently extractor moist air over a period of time. technically it extracts 220m3 per hour. Even the most basic 'cheap' cooking extractors will deal with 3 times that volume and good ones will extract 6 or 7 times that volume. In real terms that would mean you need between 4 to 7 of those extractors to do the job of what a single dedicated cooking extractor could achieve. When it comes to dealing with greasy smoke filled air, then the difference between a simple ceiling extractor and a dedicated cooking extractor is the difference between a gentle streaming brook and the grand canyon.

Hi Gemma. Our old kitchen had a similar problem with the extractor reaching the outside wall via a run along the top of a series of wall cabinets. As we didn't want a the same problem we redesigned our new kitchen with the hob on the opposite side of the room on an outside wall. It now works much more efficiently as the extracted air is sucked out immediately behind the extraction unit.

You can get extractors that have external/remote motors which are (a bit) quieter but you'll still have induction noise, Faber, Westin, Elica for example. But just having the right sized ducting going smoothly outside can make a huge difference to the noise level and efficiency. The minimum height of the extractor depends on if you're using gas or electric and the manufacturers instructions but as a rule of thumb gas is 750mm from burners and 600 from electric hob but moving it up or down a couple of inches won't make much practical difference, just what looks best to you.

Thank you for the comments. Bora extractors look great, Luke, but we haven’t had our current induction hob long and not keen to replace it if we don’t have to.
Earl & Calam Design and Build we (mainly my husband) cook daily and use the extractor on a low setting almost every time, turning it up when it’s particularly steamy (steaming veg, cooking pasta or reducing sauces). When you say “high powered fan” would the extraction rate just depend on the size of the room? Would provision for a recycling unit just be a power supply?
Thanks so much for the advice. I had tried to contact a local kitchen designer but they aren’t working through lockdown.

I believe that Westin don’t specify a maximum height for their flush ceiling extractors, they just say it needs to be installed at the highest point of the room. You could call them to check - they’re very helpful. If I’m right then you could have one of those in the new higher ceiling (unless it’s going to be vaulted in which case that could be tricky)?
