updating living room
Hi guys. I’m trying to revamp my longe and just need some help to put it together. My hubby started off doing the t.v wall, not sure whether o finish it off with paint or clad with some warm wooden planks?
I practically need everything new for this room except for the sofas . So new rug, cushions, coffee table / ottoman. New lamps, console table/ cabinets. Also any suggestion of any affordable original artwork? I am planning on changing the blinds too but will keep the curtains for now until l have done up most of the room.
Any help with this project gratefully received.

Comments (14)I would paint all the walls a soft buttery yellow - Restoration Hardware's Butter would be perfect. New window covering in the alcove could be a roman-style roll-up blind (you can find good inexpensive ones at K-Mart) that would pick up the tones from the wood floors and shutters. Art with red, gray and yellow matting hung in a grouping over the fireplace would add a classy touch. Your current furniture needs to be re-arranged in an attractive, more intimate way. It is perfectly fine to stick to this neutral palette without adding any colour, but if you do want to add colour, then the brighter the better. A mustard yellow, an acid green, a raspberry pink or a plum would look good, as would a strong teal. If you want to use primary colours then use them sparingly to avoid it looking like a child's playroom! Comments (1)I think tan leather would look good with the mango furniture. I'm not sure that mid century would complement your furniture, Chesterfields are fashionable and fine for modern homes so you could go down that route. Decor wise with tan leather cooler colours work best - blues, greens and greys. Comments (2)I really like what you've done so far but you're right, the furniture doesn't really suit it anymore. I'm in a similar situation as have decorated my lounge but also feel my couch needs changing. maybe you could dress your table with a white table cloth and runner with a pretty centrepiece to tone down the wood. Maybe some white wooden chairs? You could probably buy some off eBay or something and up cycle them until your budget allows you to replace them with something fancier. curtain wise I would look for a plain pattern closely matched to the wall colour...but then I quite like it when curtains blend with the the walls. 3 years agoI know it was pricey 😢 I’ll try another random search to see if I can find something else. it’s always good to chat things through or get other ideas, i have a whole new room to do from scratch (rareity) i know exactly what I want, but can I find it no 😂
Another idea is an IKEA hack or similar, not this one but a floating console could work. I also thought of adding castors to a console but may be a bit too industrial. If the console is only slightly shorter I doubt you’d notice it though as you never really look look at things straight on. I always thought my living room alcoves were even until I measured them recently and they’re not 😂

Sadly I can only photoshop a rug if it’s laying down (in the right direction) and doesn’t contain any light colours 😂
The abstract is my favourite, especially if you go for a smoky greeny blue paint. I think the silver just gets a bit lost with the sofa but it’s obviously which you prefer

i also tried a different art.
one thing I have been thinking about is that so little of your lovely floor will show. I know I said the front feet of the furniture should sit on it (and the gold one was just that little bit too small). There are two other options, one is the rug “island” as people refer to it. Most people don’t seem to like it as it breaks rug “rules” although for the last few years if you look at the more modern interior furnishings companies, they’ve been doing this or layering rugs. Alternatively there are a few abstract shaped ones around. Just thought I’d mention it although I do really like the “blue” abstract one

3 years agoI like the mirror, I think I prefer the plain one but it’s what you prefer:) I also like the art but must admit I prefer it with the other rug 😢
similar’ish to what Wumi suggested before, I’ve added floating shelves on the right with a floor lamp.I don’t know what your thoughts are? (The lamp wouldn’t sit quite there obviously and I’d try and balance the height of some/ the things on The shelf with the top of the mirror)
why don’t you order what you like so far and take stock on art, paint colours etc? I know if you’re an art lover it‘s normally a good idea to choose that first but it can be anything you fall in love with!
Ps iknow the paint I used is really dark but I’m limited on options!

3 years agoAgree with Stephen, worth relocating the radiator and better to get it done before you start painting and dressing the room.
I really like the last layout Minnie did, personally I’d have a plain round mirror rather than a stylised one and I’d add in some elements in complementary colours to your navy sofa - orange, yellow, maybe even some pink. You can do this with some cushions, artwork, ornaments and maybe even your rug.
