pitched roof and render?

Hi there

Just moved in to this lovely new house and I am absolutely rubbish at visualising things. Don't want to spend my life savings and hate it! So firstly:

1) does anyone have an app or could recommend one where I could see what a pitched roof over the garage and porch would look like please? I can't decide to just make the pitch over the porch and door or extend the pitched roof over the front window like the house opposite has done. We face west though so don't want it to make it any gloomier?

2) Can't decide whether to get the whole front rendered or just the garage and porch? Have just had a quote for £1.5k for repointing the front so would my money be better spent just rendering it? Will it cost much more?

Also can't decide on the color render. The house opposite exactly the same as mine has just had k-rend in limestone white and I don't want to look like i'm copying them! Also don't know what colour k-rend will best go with the blue door and garage door. How do you decide without risking choosing the wrong colour?

I appreciate that speaking to a builder etc. will get me more info and have that in progress, its tricky finding someone with reccommendations if you don't know the area, and would like to be a more decisive and informed client :-)

I wouldn’t rush into rendering. It is a lovely looking house. We were used to a beautiful 1918 house then moved to a 1970s house and were all ready to do the usual render and windows makeover. As months went by we got used to the look and have recently simply upgraded to better quality windows, gutter and fascia, and are planning landscaping. We’ve retained the overall look. I would recommend taking your time to decide.

Personally I think adding a pitched roof over the garage is a 1980s thing and for the most part we now better appreciate the the architecture. These houses were built with flat roof areas and in my opinion it looks wrong when that’s changed.

Render- is the house opposite detached? Personally I think you devalue your house when you make a pair of semis mismatched. I think you could do a lot worse than investing in a front door you love and some landscaping

The answer to your question; is to find a local architect, with who you can discuss your ideas before you employ them to draw up plans. They have the knowledge to help you decide on the next step. Beware those who offer you "Free" advice, nothing worth having in life is free, there is always a catch. You can find an architect either by personal recommendation, or by going to the RIBA website and searching for one in your area. With regard to whether you should go for bricks, or render, can depend on planning office guidelines in your local area, best you visit the planning office and speak to a planning officer. Hi Suzanna, Here are some photos of all three options for your consideration. Pitched roof + brickwork: Pitched roof + render: Pitched roof + cladding: I think render definitely can work but if you're dead set against it you can go for statement-making cladding or try and match the extension brickwork with that of your house. Hi there! I would strongly suggest that you first consider the local regulations. That way you will increase the likelihood of the plan being approved by your council's planning officer (assuming you require permits). Therefore, I would take a look at other similar extensions in your street, see how the shape of the roof would fit in with the existing roof and finally, check if the shape of the roof would make an impact on the neighbouring houses in terms of sunlight. I agree with Jonathan - I would hold off with the pitched roof and the render. These things would cost a lot of money and would not add to the value of the house. Longer term they might even de-value the house as it would stick out for looking too different.

This is our 70s house we too thought of a make over but have come to like it as it is. We have added lots of greenery at the front and replanted the front garden. Next on the list is repainting the porch and garage doors and maybe a green roof over the garage in time.
