Windows Design Dilemma

roof light decisions

Any advice on where to put the roof lights? Current plan is to have one long one but perhaps it’s better to have 3 across the extension or a large one one side and one smaller one in the kitchen? Thanks

by the look of it you would have a large opening (bifold) in a rear and on a top of that you would have a kitchen window. i would say take it in consideration what type of lighting you would have for example if you have spot lights you would end up better with a windows away from the kitchen area and would need to make sure (if you have a flat roof what i assume) you leave enough ceiling area for a rest of a lighting to be installed.

in my point of view you would end up better if you have 2 larger sized windows in the rest of a 2/3 of of the extension as kitchen is not counting as part of the area just as units are eating the space so you would measure at least 600mm away from the wall where the kitchen is positioned.

if you have any island in the area where you have a skylights again is a question mark if you would like to have hanging pendant lights above the island. if so window cant be there either

Do you want to see the reflection of the LEDs in the roof light? I wouldn't like that as it will show up every mark on the glass every time it gets dark.

Aluclad front door ....decisions decisions

I'm probably overthinking things but I'm have a front door dilemma... The architects concept for the entrance to our new house is it to be dark, enclosed and protective so when the door opens it reveals a very light space with a full height corner window showing views over the garden to sea and mountains. I love this concept but there's something niggling me! The front door is planned to be Black Aluclad with vertical lines mimicking the cladding . I'm concerned that the vertical indented lines will just look false. We will use this door a lot, as will out big dog who like to try to open doors.. I'm worried if the Aluminium cladding will not stand up to claws, at least wood can be sanded down and repainted. Does anyone have an aluclad door, how does it stand up to wear? As I'm writing this I'm seeing that the problem is the type of door. There's a niggle saying I'd prefer it to be a wood clad door continuing the larch cladding but I'd have no idea where to start as the window company don't offer anything like this. Any ideas that may help clear my total indecision?

I’m with the keepers! I think you might end up devaluing your house if you took out all the original features such as the doors, latches etc. I think you need to experiment with some colours for the walls and look at replacing the carpet which is a bit of a cold grey colour. Also have you looked into the history of the house as I don’t think the leaded lights look like original arts and crafts style to me!

Go with the rooflights if you want a nice bright space. Builders don't have much vision in my experience, and prefer to do what they've always done.

you have plenty of space still for lighting even tho with a big window but i like symmetric things during my builts
