Help with 1970s open plan ground floor

I am completely stumped on this. My house is completely open plan downstairs (3 bed semi, 1970s). I love the openness but it is really lacking style. There is one big wall that spans the length of house and I just don't know how to make it look more interesting and stylish. It has been so hard to decide on paint colour as all the walls link and there is no natural divide between lounge and diner, so I've ended up with just a boring wall. I've painted it twice and still not happy. I feel my TV should be more central but my husband is adamant we can't move it due to Sky wire! Photo attached (excuse the mess, working from home of course! Any advice on decor or furniture position welcome...

Hi Claire

It looks like you have done a good job zoning the spaces by having rugs define the lounging space versus the dining space. Depening on your access to the dining room I would be tempted to pull forward your sofas onto the rug, but don't block flow around the room. If you wanted to define the spaces further you could consider open shelving between the 2 rooms so that the light still flows through.This type of idea but side on (Please be sure to anchor against the wall) ww.next.co.uk/style/es925118/925118#925118

Hi Claire I can’t offer any advice but I have a similar room and a similar dilemma that I posted a few days ago! The advice given to me, and something that I picked up on, was that the long wall is too long for a feature wall. So instead I am going to paint the wall behind my sofa in a different colour

Hi Stacy. I think weatherboarding will work for the look you're after. Would you paint it all one colour? My only worry was whether it would all be a bit one dimensional and whether the boarding would make the ground floor look lower ( I've drawn it out though and it doesn't seem to make any difference but that could be my lack of drawing skills!) I wonder if you could add a porch with weatherboard like this with either side of the front rendered and painted? The porch doesn't have to be as complex/expensive as this with the steps etc. I've had a similar size ŵall rendered and it was about £150 from memory so the cost would really be for the porch. Can you or your husband draw? Mid way through a renovation - looking for the cheapest ( yet most stylish and subtle way to build a cosy snug - had planned to put in two sets of pocket doors so when both sets are open the current open plan room is revealed again - it is a small Victorian terrace and had all its lovely traditional features taken out by the previous owners - so trying to give it a new charachter with elements of surprise - eg orange paint on the wall returns to draw your Eye right through the room to the garden.. Should each area be in one colour or should I be bold and paint the ceilings a strong colour? Lots of ideas but can't work out which way to go... The floor will be two shades of grey and the runner on the stair is orange ( if I can find a decent shade)

One plan- yes others in the street have extended to the front, although most have done a full height 2 storey extension - so the precedent is there. Jen - it is a lovely layout but we have the opportunity and the money to make it perfect before we move in so would rather reconfigure it now. The combined dining/kitchen would be only 3m deep, and we couldn't extend to the back as the garden is just about the right size - we don't want to eat into it. Plus the living room feels too long and narrow at 5m deep

Hi Clare,

We had the same problem with our 1960s long room. How about a timber slatted wall to create zones the room? Like the one below. This will still allow the room to be open. I think they call it 'broken up" living. It would also suit the 1970s design. It doesn't have to be as deep as in the photo just enough to create a cosier zone.
