Dulux Grey Steel 4 or Dulux White Ash

I am having to make a decision between using Dulux Steel Grey 4 or Ashdown White in an East facing bedroom with a beige carpet (can't afford to change that at the moment as it came with the house and is good quality). Have contacted Dulux a number of times today as I wanted to find a light neutral (NN) grey that didn't look blue as so many greys can. I was toying between Steel Grey 4 or White Mist (which in fact does contain blue) and there is very little difference to see between them. I was going to opt for Steel Grey 4. Then this afternoon, I found out about Ash White. This contains yellow, black and red I believe. However, I used Egyptian Cotton in the West facing bedroom and I think it was a mistake because of the beige carpet which makes it look olive green in some light, which wasn't my intention. I'm concerned that the same could happen with Ash White as it did with Egyptian Cotton which contains the same colours, albeit in different proportions. I was wondering if anyone can offer some advice. As Steel Grey is an NN, it could be a safer bet but I am concerned that the bedroom could appear cold. Does anyone have any views? Unfortunately, at this stage, I can't look at other colours and I am limited to Dulux because of timescale and a desire to avoid DIY stores at the moment. Many thanks.

The best way to check is to buy/order match pots and paint them onto A4 card. You can attach them to the different walls with blue tack. That way you can gauge how cool the colours are. Colours are affected by light so I think match pots are the way to go. I’ve got Egyptian Cotton in my bedroom and it has a slight pink hue, I’ve never seen green in it.

Thank you Sonia for your excellent advice. I'll try that tomorrow. Re. the Egyptian Cotton, I'm sure the green colour is the due to the carpet! Once I've got more white in the room, I think it might change again!

I also had a black carpet that we ended up changing to cream as the black showed every speck! As soon as the cream carpet went down the whole room lifted! I'm not against dark carpet at all but I'd never get black again, I actually like the idea of a grey carpet but maybe not with grey walls.

Which period are you trying to emulate? The damask isn't to my personal taste although that's neither here nor there but I do think the scale may be a bit large and heavy for the room. Have you considered trellis/quatrefoil/geometric/chinoiserie etc style papers? They are period papers but popular Atm. Or just consider something with texture,mie grasscloth effect. You could keep the walls fairly light or neutral in colour and add colour for accessories, art etc. Or if you're going for a velvet Chesterfield consider teal, burnt orange, green, blue etc. You could also add more classical/period accessories ie urn or acorn style lamps, horses head etc (I have one I love from oka which was only £26!). I would choose the paint after the paper and the paper after the sofa!

Hi House Hunter, choosing the right shade of grey can be very difficult actually, it depends so much on the individual room and the amount of light etc. plus the look you're trying to achieve etc. Farrow & Ball and Little Greene are both great options, Dulux (in my opinion) just never achieves the same kind of finish or depth of colour. A really helpful book is 'Shades of Grey' by Kate Watson Smyth - I'd definitely recommend reading before choosing which to go for, it's a really interesting read for tips on choosing paint colours in general actually (not just grey!). Big thanks tamp75. I really like your idea of RAL 9007 for garage door (standard product) and Sadolin "volcanic ash" for the window frames. Hadn't thought of that! And I think you might be right about the weathering of the "traditional" shade of Marshalls driveway products. Have been noticing this as a pass local front gardens. Anyone have any ideas for a warm/soft white shade for the exterior wall? A mum at school suggested RAL 9010 - she said that was the advice her sister (an architect) had given her on her house (she was doing the interiors). Any views?
