Flooring to match new kitchen

we are moving to a new build & have chosen the kitchen, luckily staying away from any upgrades but we have to choose flooring which is not included so can get anything really within budget, I just don’t know whether to match with worktop which I guess can be tricky or go for complete contrast, surfaces are a light grey concrete type finish, units dark glossy grey, this would be for hallway, kitchen, dining & wet areas

If you want to stay with the monotone cool colour scheme then it would have to be a shade of grey or as per the image.

On the other hand if you want to add some warmth to it have a timber effect.

The two images shown seem to show very different colours. The upper one looks quite warm and the lower one cool and blueish. If the worktop is cool then I would go for a wooden floor or something similar to wood, its a warmer grey then a floor in a similar hue may work. I wouldn't have a cool grey floor.

There are arguments either way. Flooring should always be fitted beneath floor standing appliances (whether freestanding or integrated) for ease of installation and removal (and in the case of freestanding appliances, to ensure there are no areas that are visible without any flooring). By having the floor fitted first ensures a level surface, and as mentioned above items such as end panels will be fitted directly on the floor. The kitchen fitter is obviously taking responsibility for not scratching the new floor during installation, and particularly when moving appliances such as the fridge and range cooker. When fitting timber flooring, it is necessary to leave an expansion gap around the perimeter. By plonking heavy kitchen furniture on top largely prevents the natural expansion/shrinkage of the timber, and therefore there is a risk that the flooring may bow or pull apart. One solution is for the kitchen fitter to cut out around the plinth legs, but this does mean if you ever change the layout, but wish to keep the flooring, you will left with a floor resembling Edam cheese!

I can't imagine 2 different wood floors looking good next to each other, to be honest. I had that situation in a previous house (not my choosing) and it always really annoyed me. If the budget can stretch, could you replace all the downstairs flooring with the engineered board of choice? I know stripped floorboards look good, but they're horrible to live with, so you might benefit there?

Hi Getty Welty What a shame about the worktop but I think it's almost a blessing in disguise. Once you have settled on the worktop my advice would be to take samples of the cupboards & worktop to a tile shop and look at them altogether. You really need to see a large tile together with the other samples to appreciate the overall look. A 10 x 10 sample is only a representation of the whole tile and the colour changes on a larger scale. I don't really understand the "walk through cupboard into larder space". The plan just shows storage either side, would you not be better just having a wide larder unit? Agree with Jonathan re range and integrating fridge. Only on the assumption you won't be using both dishwashers at the same time, I might swap the one in the corner with the bin (so you're not dripping mess on the floor and DW's in corners are trickier as you can only stand to one side to stack etc) and move the other DW to the island but also swap the side of the drawers. It would be a major trip hazard though if you do use at the same time :) Given you have 2 DW's do you need an extra fridge in the utility? something like Little Greene French grey/pale may work for units, which is a Victorian paint colour. You could have oak on the island although it's obviously not as practical as Quartz etc. i think a butlers sink would also be more in keeping?

Wood effect would look fab. You can choose from wood effect porcelain (recommend under floor heating) or LVT. My sister chose quite dark chestnut coloured porcelain with her charcoal grey units and creamy green coloured worktop, but porcelain comes in many shades and patterns.
