Your thoughts on windows & sliding-door layout at rear

We have a west facing back garden. We can't decide where to put doors and sliding doors at the rear of our house. I'm not mad for bi-fold doors and don't like internal window benches

. We spend a lot of time going in and out of the garden and don't really leave the doors wide open a lot (we live in Ireland so might do this 1-2 months during the summer). Would love your thoughts on where to put sliding and / or back door to garden. Room 4 is a den/living room and has a sliding window (not door).

Chloe, I do love your idea and if the kitchen is big enough for you, I think it would great and work fairly well for you too. p.s great work with the cardboard cutouts! I may suggest switching the dining room and sitting room as I think the flow may be a bit better for you but without knowing you a little better (and your use of the space) that is hard to tell ..its really a personal choice. Try thinking how often you use each of the elements with in your cardboard room and imagine moving between the pieces. Is the plan to scale? I would love to have a better look for you but I can not seem to be able to open the image to blow it up. We get asked this question a lot, and that is why we sell integrated or integral blinds which are totally enclosed within the glass cavity of the double glazed unit, and are available for most of the doors and windows we sell. They can be manually or electrically operated, are available in a range of colours, and have Venetian or pleated versions. They can be closed for complete privacy, opened to any angle for different shading or raised up almost completely out of the way. Aside from enclosing all the working parts (safe for toddlers), they enhance the thermal efficiency of the unit they are enclosed within and will never need cleaning! You can upgrade existing doors and windows, although if you are purchasing new, ask your supplier about Uni-blinds Integral Blinds beforehand.

Hi! This is a long a complex post! It's hard to know exactly what your question is. If you are looking for help with the layout design then this is something that I can help you with. For the technical questions relating to structural design then yes, as you say, these are best answered by a structural engineer. Getting the layout right for you first and then speaking to the engineer is usually the process that I would go through. I always start off with looking at what it is you want to achieve from the additional space you create. I would also look at upgrading the thermal performance of the roof since you will need to recover the roof anyway. You will need to add in insulation anyway but there are ways of doing it that is much more effective and there are some serious errors that are commonly made that you need to avoid - like cutting holes in the insulation to install inset downlights. With the awning go for a dark shade such as dark grey. I had one fitted in a cream fabric and it’s gone all mossy green on the exposed bit. You can get a covered one so when it is closed the fabric will stay protected from the elements. If budget allows get an electric one as cranking it open and shut by hand is pretty hard work. Awnings come in many qualities and I would not get a budget one again!
