do we extend or reconfigure?! 1903 house

Hello!
We are in the process of busing a house which we love. We have young family and would really like to create some an open plan space for eating, dining and living.

We thought about:
Putting a wall or doors between the dining room and living room

Knocking through between the kitchen and dining room to create one big space.

Will this be enough space or should we try and extend our into the garden?

The garden is on a steep incline so it will add to our costs. However we are hoping this maybe a forever home so willing to wait and save for longer to do it properly!

For note neighbours have extended out 3m into the garden.
