Should I continue the cladding on the bottom half of the house and window to tie it all together

What do you think I could do to tie it all in I thought about taking off the cladding and getting the house rendered at the bottom and painting windows grey

Would love to see any photos of the New England style cladding, we have a 1960's house that we are updating and are considering both render and cladding. We are making the top windows deeper and are trying to decide whether to use white or grey aluminium/pvc frames. We have had grey (covered in tape in pic) bifold doors installed but can have these powder coated in white if it is better to stick to white windows. Thank you!

Hi Alfie, A few suggestions that might help if you want a modern look to your home. Extend the current cladding to underneath the first floor window - this will create a nice line all the way from the ground to the pitch of your roof. Then stain all the cladding to match a deep wood color Change the windows at the fron of your house - may I suggest a black frame (here's a link with some examples - https://mariakillam.com/black-windows/). What this will do will balance the horizontal and verticle lines of the front of the house because of the grid like pattern of them, which is currently unaestethically pleasing. Also the white of the window frames do not go well with the cladding & brick colors. Paint your bricks a dark charcoal color. Paint your garage door black. Paint your front door black or install a larger front door package that is more modern and maybe incorporates the kind of windows you will have at the fron of your house like mentioned above. As has already been mentioned, the landscaping needs to be extended up to your home (the mature tree is wonderful). Right now the front of your home looks like a concrete jungle. You can soften this with scrubbery and possibly allowing a virginia creeper to climb up your home (this is a non-evasive climber that will not hurt your brickwork or structrual integrity of your home). All of these suggestions combined will transform the look of your home, give you an exterior to be proud of, and possibly give you the best looking house on your street. Of course, if modern is not what you are going for, this won't work, but may give you some ideas to jump off from. Best wishes & good luck!

I think your house is lovely - I really like the existing pale bricks and hanging tiles. I’m helping my daughter house hunt and she has just rejected looking at a 70s house that’s had hanging tiles replaced with wood as it just looked odd against the adjacent houses and she was concerned about maintenance. But I know that many people do prefer the wood cladding so it’s a matter of taste.

depends how much money you have to spend but the cheapest option to carry on with the cladding and yes paint the windows grey would look ok

no I agree with you
to be honest I don't like cliche white rendered houses just because I prefer something a bit different if you are thinking about wanting a white rendered hiuse then maybe try to 'jazz' it up with say pale blue windows and front door or something?

the overall aesthetics. some people may say it's fine so please don't change the whole house purely on my opinion because I'm quite fussy when it comes to this sortof thing but the fact that there's wood, there's brick, there's white windows, grey front door, white rendering, then a totally random coloured roof which doesn't really fit in
but that's me being very picky! I'm just answering your questions 😉

No thanks for your input just good to get it from a different view windows are definitely going to get sprayed to match the front door I'm just not sure whether to take cladding off and render the bottom half as I really like that look but I'm just hoping after that the aesthetics will look good

that's ok people tend to overthink their own house projects so it's easy for me to come along and tell you what to do!
I agree once the windows are painted it will change the whole look... I think you should sort the windows and then decide about the cladding because that might help?

I think also a more modern tile on porch roof will help as well I just don't think the cladding sits right no matter what I do to windows

I like the timber cladding, but atm there‘s not enough of it to make it look good.

Have you considered cladding the whole porch area, so everything under the porch roof (and window)?

I like the cladding. How about cladding the whole bottom of the house, then white render above, similar to E D’s suggestion?

I personally just don't think the house can take the cladding. it's almost just the wrong style all together and the white rendering with the grey will look so much smarter

I assume that this is in a road of similar semis so personally I would make it look a lovely example of what it is eg by beautiful landscaping of the front. I’d look at the two houses together and look at porch examples on similar semis when deciding what materials work. Personally I’m not convinced that all white render and grey windows will work with the house next door unchanged.

The pitched porch roof and the bay window don’t sit quite right to me however that’s due to knowing it’s a 60s/70s house and next door have added a bay in any case. Your house should work with next door IMO and I agree with Sarh123 I would focus on landscaping. The house looks very smart in any case and I like the cladding and garage and door.

I really don't think just landscaping is going to be enough and I think the cladding has to be removed do you have any other suggestions about how to try and make the porch roof and bay work better with the house

If you want overall kerb appeal. I’m helping my daughter house hunting at the moment and you can’t help but look at them together and notice when one has an inconsistent makeover. But remember it’s your house and should be your choice! Google street view is another good way to “walk down” similar roads and decide what looks good on this type of house.

if anything surely the cladding will make jobies house stand out against the other semi if it's made all white it will help to blend with the other half because let's face it a semi house is usually rendered rather than cladded

KingBing, everyone on this forum is trying to help. We make suggestions and the OP can digest all the ideas, then pick a favourite, or even pick none at all! It’s their choice. You shooting down everyone’s ideas is not polite or helpful. We are a team of amateur advisors, but we try to respect other people’s ideas. You criticising every other comment is just confusing to jobie, I feel.

I would suggest looking at what has worked on other pairs of similar houses. Our architect pushed render and black windows for our 1970s house but we used Rightmove to find some roads with similar houses and went along each road deciding which alterations we liked (we eventually just went for upgraded quality windows and very little change in style). Just see what others have done and what you think looks good. My gut feeling is to render the porch (to match existing) but leave the wall adjoining the neighbour untouched and leave windows white. Our house has the same roof tiles as yours and we found some redland flat tiles in a similar colour for around the new dormer/bay areas so they tie in with the roof but lose the chunkiness. But it’s your house and your taste and these contributions should be “food for thought” not instructions!
