Hello! A period style garage, creative advice please!

last month

We are hoping to do a nice job on a garage, which is to front of house. We would like to do an open soffit with exposed rafter tails, open soffit. Could you suggest soffit detail? We have 150 rafters and will need 100mm cellotex, Klober Perma Extreme, vent trays above cellotex, slate roof 20 degress, with Blue Clay tile round ridge. Klober will be visible in the eaves, could we put burlap or other simple detail under it? Would love siding but we need to ventilate eaves, and not sure how to do it and costs. Thank you very much.

Hello furlottia, I agree you need someone who is not standard, who is highly creative and thinks outside the box, that can give you a lot of ideas and create something fabulous within your given budget.. It is an absolute must when considering a fantastic and interesting kitchen that is refreshing to look at for as long as you have it.. Ideally you want someone who can design with all the fundamentals in mind.. So that means procurement... appliances- what and for where, fixtures, finishes and the interior aesthetic along with it.. flooring, windows et al.. Someone who considers the space and what would sit right within the home and someone who can understand exactly how you use the space and what you want from your kitchen... Basically someone who can do everything for you in terms of the design, style and procurement- but the work itself! For that, you then need a fabulous fitter! Who is also a god at fitting! :))

Hello Blade40, I like your ideas.. I too would build out from the utility/garage side to join the exterior of the living room to create one big space which you can divide with glass doors in areas.. - a gr8 idea! Maybe it's a glass side return? For internal division, you can also consider panels that slide to form a wall decorated to suit the room. Screens or semi permanent structures such as wooden slatted dividers as a means to section areas or screen off kitchen or other functional aspects of the home.. Thing to consider is budget? How much? and also spatially the garden- It looks quite big and so as I want to suggest some other ideas.. Think of your materials.. Think how you want your home to blend with the landscape.. Think of the environment... Southern California vibe is gr8! You can achieve the same kind of feel.. Open landscape and sea air, textures, light... chalky paints and layering.. Pale creams and stone colours for the exterior with creams and off whites in the interior. Consider natural materials for flooring Cork, Jute, Coir, Sisal carpeting or rugs.. Painted floorboards if there are any.. Large plants and plenty of open vistas! How you mix your materials for the facade of the house could also add to it's aesthetic splendour.. Woods, concrete textural cladding, earthy colours with large earthy stoneware, plants and large leaves... Landscaping and architectural features.. Garden landscaping too and split levels.. Internally.. Boho chic or Modern lounge luxury? :))

Starting from the positives, to make your house look more contemporary, I'd suggest replacing all the windows with dark painted timber or aluminium casements, with no glazing bars or little fanlights. I'd also remove the two bays, which are a weak attempt to bring some period style to this clearly non-period house. There should be plenty of space to combine the kitchen and dining room and open them to the garden. You probably saw the difficulties in the two other specific changes you'd like to make. I think there's no satisfactory way to do either without disproportionate loss of useful rooms. They both go against the basic layout of the house, which generally appears relatively sensible, even if it's not what you'd ideally like. Also, I can't see that having the entrance door at the front of the house would be good aesthetically. However, moving the entrance next to the garage door and redesigning the exterior (perhaps all in hardwood, including the garage door) and interior (moving the stair and rearranging the WC) could give a welcoming and less apologetic-looking entrance. These changes, along with good landscaping, would make the house much more appealing.

Thank you all so much for your kind comments! We’re thrilled! Sadly there was none of the bay window structure behind the garage door...I can’t believe someone would have wanted to take down a gorgeous bay and replace it with the hideous garage! We are lacking in storage now so thinking of building a little storage shed down the side of the house. I’ve asked for ideas on another thread of clever side/lean to storage ideas if anyone has any!m they’d be much appreciated. Thank you!
