dining room flooring

what are your thoughts on porcelain tile for a dining room, along the lines of this:

we live on a flood plain and much as I would love a hardwood floor, I don't want to risk it, but can't help thinking that porcelain tile would feel a little cold. what do you guys think?

What style is the interior? I like both but depends on the aesthetics really. Vinyl could be an option if the seams are sealed. Have you considered other ways to protect the house from flooding too? (I don’t know a lot but there’s been a lot of flooding and risks locally atm)

I know several people who have porcelain tiles, me included. My sister has a wood effect one. They are very cold underfoot during winter, so have underfloor heating if budget allows. I’m not sure how they cope with flooding, but they are very tough and impervious and easy to clean. This is hers.

Hi Jay, we agree that a golden oak could clash with your walnut worktop. But think you could still go for an oak with lighter or ashen tones. The shades below are understated so would be great for flowing through multiple rooms too. And of course, as they're lighter floors they'd help to keep your spaces feeling nice and open. Hi Subedi, May I ask what exactly is your project? The picture is for the existing plans, right? So at the moment there is only bedrooms and bathroom. I like the pale wood effect best, as it gives a warmer impression than the other. Being cold underfoot is a problem. Fine in summer, but definitely not so in a cold winter, unless, as suggested above, you have underfloor heating (water pipes, not electric, obviously). But if you’re concerned about flooding, and preserving the floor, the thick insulation needed beneath the underfloor heating pipes would need to be very securely sealed off with membrane from the possibility of water or damp ingress, or the insulation could dissolve, leaving a messy cold hollow beneath the piping. Maybe, unless you could have rugs on your tiles, you’d be better off with a vinyl or real wood floor? Having just put in underfloor heating, it’s a lot of work doing it properly, and a lot of people claiming to be professionals, are only as good as their worst installer...
On the other hand, once done well, it’s excellent, more efficient, and cheaper to run, than radiators. Finding the right flooring is soooo boring. I’ve spent weeks sifting through every type, looking for the right ones. Who knew, for eg., that there were so many different tiles, let alone vinyl, wood, laminates, etc?

Both light and dark shades go well with porcelain tiles. And many think that they would look cold and clinical but personally, my experience had been awesome with them. So I would recommend it.
