Help finding right breakfast bar shade

Our new kitchen design incorporates a breakfast bar and I’m struggling to find an economical solution. The kitchen supplier has quoted us £1900 plus VAT for a white oiled prime wide stave worktop. I can see there‘s a number of companies online who sell oak breakfast bars of a similar size (we need 2m x .9m) for around £500 ish but none who seem to sell white oiled pieces. Regular oak is too yellow and I like the whitish grey shade which blends nicely with the decor

I don’t have much experience with this so I’m wondering if people would normally just apply a white oil themselves? Or is this why the finish I want is so expensive? Or am I looking in the wrong places?

I’m not at all handy so whatever the solution it has to be made by someone else I.e tradesperson.

no problem. Are you getting or have you purchased it from B & Q? If you don't mind me asking. Only because it looks like you have gone to a fair amount of work in reducing the height of the wall and replastering etc. where any half decent kitchen designer would have seen the issue quickly on the survey and come up with this solution. My wife used to restore furniture. She reliably informs me, that the wood is Oak. If she were finishing that to order, to look the same, she would use antique pine Bri-wax for that finish and colour. If you want it washable / wipeable for a kitchen a similar effect could be achieved with a medium oak SATIN varnish. Try one coat to see if the colour is rich enough, if it is, put a clear coat on top. If not, put another coat of medium oak on. Two coats should suffice. Ronseal Satin Medium Oak Varnish. You are going to be better off with a wide plank reclaimed timber than a new bit. However, it is possible to make it look old. The 'Live edge' as you call it isn't actually bark it's just rough cut and then been given a 'chopped' look. Also, not that difficult with a couple of good sanders and an axe. However, She ' the wife', was ( is ) particularly talented in that direction. She assures me, that it's easy !! Apparently the hard part is sourcing the right timber. It needs to be reclaimed for maximum effect, it also needs to be 'Wide plank' as two timbers joined together down the middle won't look right. We've made tables to order with tops similar.

One thing to think about. I have used Osmo oil a lot and it's a great product, but if you opt for a tinted oil such as one with white in, then it can turn some woods pink. Also, if you put a tinted coat on and then clear (which I have) then if it gets scratched it could be difficult to re-coat. Clear on top of tinted could accentuate the scratches, if they have gone right through. I would try to go for one type of oil only to keep things simple.

In my opinion you need to get your kitchen designer to show you the whole room (including dining area) on a computer generated image. I think that you might conclude that it would be better to have more room for an extending dining table- it is after all a big house and if you have guests staying you may well need breakfast room for 8 or more. I also think the width of the room means the island is not particularly deep and making it longer may emphasise that. I think I might just put a couple of stools on the hall side of the island- not for breakfast but for wine and conversation while you are entertaining.
