Kitchen Bi-Folds - Click Fit, Roman or Curtains

Hi all

Hoping for a bit of advice and inspiration.

We moved into a new house last year, the kitchen is open plan (5m x 4m), and we have two sets of external bi fold doors.

In total we have 10 doors, plus three velux windows plus a side window.

We only moved in at the end of last spring benefitting from the great weather during the first lock down, the room was nice and toasty, however by contrast this winter has been absolutely frigid.

Morning's are cold, and when we have the heating on in the evening the room struggles to get to temperature even by the end of the evening.

Whilst we would benefit from a slightly more powerful set of radiators, ultimately we've got a lot of exposed glass where we are losing heat from.

Discussing things this morning, we started to play around with different ideas for window coverings.

Our initial idea was to go for click fit blinds thinking they would be a relatively inexpensive option, I've got to admit I nearly fell off my chair when we priced them up and they came in at the best of £800.

Anybody else suffered with a cold room with bi-folds and installed roman blinds or curtains?

Can’t help directly with your dilemma but I also know of someone who knocked all their rooms into one another and had bi-folds and is also having the same problem. She said it’s permanently cold and wished she’d have thought about it more before they had it done.

I would have thought thick curtains floor to ceiling would be better than Roman blinds though.

Yes it certainly takes some warming up.

The summer was absolutely amazing with the doors open a lot of the time with the great weather, but this winter has been a bit of a chilly affair.

We've just been looking at full length curtains, which might be a better option for us particularly if they are lined as well.

It all depends whether your doors are still on order or you've had them fitted. Origin Bifolds have a fantastic selection of bifolding door blinds that work not just with their doors but all bifolding doors. They're available manual, automatic and solar controlled. Highly recommend them. Your other option is integral glass blinds that is blinds housed between the panes of glass of your double glazed units. There are only a few manufacturers of these the for reliability and quality you need to shop around. Pellini are the worlds largest designer of these blinds and they are made by their approved manufacturers, Morley Glass of Leeds being one in the UK and the biggest. Visit most quality double glazing showrooms and its the Morley product you'll probably see. With these blinds, quality is everything - you really do get what you pay for. There is no immediate drawback to these blinds other than some may find them more expensive when budgeting for their bifolds but the benefits they provide are excellent. The integral blinds, between glass blinds, integrated blinds or however they may be referred to are in a hermetically sealed unit. You can't get to them, you can't clean them - that is the purpose of them. The result is blinds that don't get in the way, blinds that don't need cleaning and when closed you can still enjoy the great appearance of your bifolding doors without obscuring them. In the unlikely event that the blinds fail, you have to replace the whole glass with the blind as it is one component. It's also worth knowing that these blinds can be fitted to existing windows and doors. If you have older bifolding, sliding or french doors and even windows, there is no reason why you can't have integral blinds if you want them. As long as the unit is 24mm or wider, it should be fine. It'll mean new glass fitted with blinds. Integral blinds fitted in the latest generation glass could even help to make your older windows far more energy efficient as well! Fiona - I’ve been looking into replacing some doors with Crittal style and have contacted loads of suppliers and companies. The one that I’ve been most impressed with is the company mentioned above by Lou Valdini - Merlin Windows in Yorkshire. (I’m in the East Midlands). They gave me a competitive quote really quickly and then I got a quote from the fitter mentioned. (They fit across the UK and they link in with Merlin to ensure timings etc). It’s likely that we will go ahead in the next few months. (Just need to convince husband as he prefers chunky timber 😂)

We stayed in an apartment last year and the bifold doors had insert blinds on the doors, like the first picture above (turquoise ones) from Hillary’s. They were white and to be honest you hardly noticed them at all when they were up, so maybe a soft grey or off white might look nice? As far as greige paint colours go, the world is your oyster! I’ve used Dulux Egyptian Cotton and love it. Also Farrow & Ball do many shades of greige such as Skimming Stone and Elephants Breath, but there are so many! I would grab as many colour charts as you can and then get some match pots and paint them on sheets of paper and blue tack to your walls and see what catches your eye.

I haven’t used either but you can also get thermal window film and thermal blinds
