Slide and stack/pivot doors? Yes or no?

Hi Everyone,
I need some advice on slide and stack doors (or slide and pivot as I think they're the same thing). We have finished the plans for our rear and side extension but can't agree on what does to have in the glass ended gable extension (6m wide and 3.7m at highest point). My partner wants bifolds but I know quite a lot of friends who have bifolds but never use them as they're cumbersome etc. Also most complain they're draughty in winter. Partner has already ruled out sliding doors as he wants the option of opening it fully so we're now considering slide and pivot doors. There doesn't seem very much genuine information/reviews about them online though (lots of companies selling them saying they're great!). We'd really love to know if anyone has got them? Do they work well? Do they stand the test of time? (My brothers bifold were brilliant for a year and then 👎). What about cost? ('ve emailed a few companies for quotes but haven't heard back yet). Basically anything you know about this type of doors and supplier recommendations would be great!

probably not what you want to hear but I think bifold doors work really well. a lot of people that I know have them and everyone loves them... fantastic for the summer for wide gain of air and great in the winter when you want to air the room
they look really smart too

No real benefits over one or the choice. It’s just down to choice. We’ve fitted both.

Fiona - I’ve been looking into replacing some doors with Crittal style and have contacted loads of suppliers and companies. The one that I’ve been most impressed with is the company mentioned above by Lou Valdini - Merlin Windows in Yorkshire. (I’m in the East Midlands). They gave me a competitive quote really quickly and then I got a quote from the fitter mentioned. (They fit across the UK and they link in with Merlin to ensure timings etc). It’s likely that we will go ahead in the next few months. (Just need to convince husband as he prefers chunky timber 😂)

We had the very same dilemma. I wanted the option of being able to open the door slightly, rather than having to open up a whole panel. In the end I factored in that our house has a lot of glass in it, it’s south facing on the living areas all day long and therefore one of our problems was the house being too warm. It only takes the sun to be out and the sky bright to warm up the house, doesn’t have to be even warm outside - we still have sun in winter! We went for bi fold in the end and it was the best decision, there may be a week give or take when we haven’t had them open but just a week or so in 6 months. Have them opened up all the time, and a previous poster mentioned about flies, it’s true, no flies stuck in the house ( incidentally a bonus). Minipie, this is a tricky one. The greeney grey would look lovely with your yellow brick or even a more yellowed grey, there are lots of houses where I live with yellow brick and ones with warm grey pale windows look lovely. I recently replaced all of mine and had the same colour inside and out. I went for a warm green grey (F&B Light Grey 17) and the same inside. As most of my neutrals inside are from the same 'hue' family it was ok, but if they had been 'bluer' as you say it could have been tricky. If the tones are the same (how light or dark) and the colours mismatched it is very noticeable. If the colours are different then the tones need to be a bit different too. I would be inclined to make a selection that works with your inside colours first and then actually paint the samples on the outside to see if they work.

Hi! I totally know what you mean about all the decision making. I’m constantly on here because I just can’t face making decisions anymore - there are too many of them. Ha ha. Ok so doors- I think it would bug you if you are used to going out via the kitchen and can’t do. Taking rubbish out etc etc back and forth. Bifold - yes I’m a set of 3 you could have the door opening on its own. Usually it would open to the left ie against the middle one then if you wanted to open all of them you just slide them over. Ideal config would be a traffic door opening to the right and a set of 2 bifolds opening to the right (so they would stack to the kitchen end. But I don’t know if that is possible or not but worth asking a supplier!

We had slide and pivot doors with three panels when we had out kitchen done as we preferred them to regular bi-folds, plus they suited the constraints of the room better for us. I absolutely love them, they provide an extra flexibility over and above what you have with with patio doors or bi-folds.

We opted for internal blinds and a pull across fly screen - which I can honestly say is the best thing ever. It means we can have the doors wide open in the summer and not have any flies come in. But a hidden bonus is, it filters the hot sunlight, which shines directly into the room from about 11.00onwards in the summer, so it keeps the room a bit cooler in the height of summer.

I like that we can have just the access door open, or that and a panel or all of the panels, but we can also choose where the gap is across the width.

This is where we got ours and whilst the product is good and works well, we have had a few hiccups with the installers, but it's all sorted now and we're extremely happy. https://panoramicdoors.co.uk/

Thanks everyone, apologies for the slow response. been caught up with homeschooling and work so extension planning had to be put aside for a few days. I think we'll need to hold fire on making any decisions until lockdown is over and we can get into some show rooms to try the doors. Only so much you can research online! Definitely going to look up Panoramic Doors though 👍
