switching living and dining room/kitchen

We are hopefully moving into our new house in the next few weeks.

The downstairs is an area we are looking at changing around. We are curious how realistic we are being.

So through the front door turning left you walk into the living room. This is connected to the kitchen (door on floor plan but there’s no door)

The lounge is the full width of the house looking onto the garden.

The thought is to switch the living room into a big kitchen diner, possibly an L shape and box the kitchen off from what would be the new living room.

Is this realistic? Not sure what kind of budgets we are talking to move these rooms around but we prefer a kitchen onto a garden.

We aren’t experts at all, so just curious

That will be expensive! Your plumbing and electric costs etc will be what drives it up but I understand your logic behind it. we spent circa 50k having an extension done a couple of years ago for the same reason as you've put. We have a good side garden and the extension goes the length of the house, with 4 meters of bifold doors, that were a godsend in the summer. Since having it done we've hardly spent any time in the living room. Even the xmas tree goes in there now! So it's down to how you'll use the room but personally I'd go for yes.

Thank you. Our hope is that if we keep the kitchen where it is then the plumbing remains the same side of the house. Extension wise we might only go a meter as we don’t need lots of extra room, but would put a nice sky light in and just give a little extra.

Hi Tas! If it was me then I wouldn't continue the kitchen back along that wall and instead create more of a galley kitchen with an island facing towards the back and a bank of full height units against the wall. This would make the rest of the room more useable by keeping the kitchen more compact and with as much storage as you need. In open plan spaces like that I find that one of the things that people find most difficult is deciding where to put the TV! I've had a lot of people come to me after they've had that kind of open plan design, but it doesn't really work for what they want to use it for. Where are any of the tall units such as fridge, oven etc going? If the sink is at the end presumably you’ll be doing any prep work there plus obviously emptying the DW etc. The breakfast bar is a very long distance from there so was wondering if you’d get the sociable area you’re after? It may be worth speaking to a concept planner. A lot of people use OnePlan on here, Karen works remotely, you just give the measurements and wish list and she can plan the whole space rather than just the kitchen as a kitchen designer would. I think seeing it in 3D would help with your decision too

Hello nehajo, You have an amazing blank canvas so some questions to help: And there are soo many interior styles so some questions to help: What is your style ? if you are not sure then What colour is the sofa and the style. Do you have a photo? What are the other furniture do you have ? Any photos ? Do you like colours pastels or brights ? What are your favourite colours ? Do you have a favourite shirt, skirt, jumper that has a pattern or style to it? photo please. Do you have a picture or photos that have a coloured frame ? What colour? Do you like plants ? or you have any already ? Are their any sentimental objects ? what is it, description ? What is the rug you want to buy is there a pic of it ? Are you thinking of some sort of fire, faux stove, or a TV for a focal point in the room ? Do you want to have a workspace in the area too? Oh do you have kids if yes then storage for toys etc if older storage for games consoles, games ? MMMmmmI think that is it to start. Cheers :)

That’s exactly what we did, left the plumbing in more or less the same place, but added an island in the extended part along with a freestanding pantry so all the food is in one cupboard. My range cooker is exactly where it was and where the sink was in front of the window, it’s now a butler sink in the island. In the extended bit in front of where your lounge is (as ours was similar layout) then we now have a tv on the wall and a sofa. The bifolds go almost the full length of the extension. Hope the move goes well.

Sounds like you’ve done a great job. Hoping we can do it a little less than 50k but who knows!! You can have grand plans and then decide it’s not worth it lol
