Lighting suggestions for beamed ceilings
Comments (2)http://www.greyblue.co.uk/faq/ Hi. I've copied this link as it may well be worth investing in a lighting consultant. It may not be as expensive as you think and I (the completely non-pro!) think you'll need some wall lights which will obviously involve chasing cables in the walls so would want to get it done properly first time. My non-expert thoughts anyway! Bed 1, it looks as if this is the only place you can have the bed so I would swap this for a flush or semi flush ceiling light. Have either tall bedside lamps So you can see to read or have lights fitted over the bed. If you're doing make up etc in here then you'll need lights fitted over a mirror etc to see. Bed 2 looks as if it can take a pendant but I would hang it higher, same for bedside tables. In the lounge I'd go for a mix of wall lights (you can also get both up and down lighters), floor lights and table lamps. I would be careful about putting in ceiling lights over furniture layouts unless you position a light centrally in the room otherwise they can look odd if you change the layout and obviously you may have drilled through beams. A pendant over the table in the kitchen will make the ceilings appear lower but I went with this in my basement as they was no getting away with the ceilings being low anyway. I'd add wall, floor and a table light around the seating area. I'd add a mix of up and down spots around the kitchen cupboards. Where I do think you'll need light is over the range. I've got them over my aga and wouldn't be able to see properly to cook without them. Maybe look into lights with heat resistant cables etc as there's not much height there....See MoreSuggestions please on making kitchen diner
Comments (5)I think you need to look at the whole house not just the ground floor. I can see why the bathroom on the GF exists because you have 4 beds and only 1 bathroom upstairs so someone installed the bathroom directly below using the same pipework etc., Do you really need that tiny bedroom upstairs at the front of the house? it would make a great en-suite to your master bedroom and balance your home better. You should speak to an estate agent to understand if this will impact the value of your home - personally I doubt it would as the room is very small. In the basement area with utility area, I would add a loo - great for kids in the garden or workmen. Then you could take down the wall between the dining room and kitchen. This is just my view but I am sure others will have better ideas. On your budget of £15k and if you are able to do some DIY you might be able to do it but I think it will be tight. If the budget were higher I would probably move the entire kitchen diner into the basement and take advantage of accessing the garden from that point too....See MoreAny ideas/suggestions on what colour I should paint my kitchen
Comments (11)We also have a north east facing kitchen, we used farrow and balls, Purbeck stone on our wall of units at the back of the kitchen (its warmer than using grey which can look cold in a north facing room), pelt on our peninsula and dimity on the walls, it give off pink hues during the day and is (nice) sort of creamy beige in the evening / on dull days. We took samples of our flooring and work top to a F&B shop/consultant and they were really helpful in confirming that the colours we wanted would work in our N/E facing room. I was pretty fixed on the the purbeck stone and pelt and it was they that suggested using dimity on the walls. Also as already suggested, tester pots and paint on large pieces of paper that you can move around the room is a good idea....See MoreKitchen project and (marble effect?) backsplash suggestions please!
Comments (21)Just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who helped with ideas, and especially Jen for giving me a bit of inspiration and a light bulb moment! You are so right, holding your nerves whilst it’s going up is the hardest!! . I did opt for a splash back only and extended it so it goes a little under the cupboards. I’ve posted the finished pic below and hopefully going to accessorise with copper and wood to add warmth! A big hug and thanks to all x...See Moremin266
