Victorian terrace - Kitchen layout advice required!
Comments (8)So the bit in the light blue circle looks like a cupboard, perhaps with a stacked wachine machine/tumble dryer in it? (good idea if so). But do you mean just past that cupboard, ie along the left hand wall as you come into the kitchen? If so then yes you absolutely could put the fridge there, it’s just going to be a bit bulky as will stick out further than normal units, and you may feel it’s in the way a lot as that’s your main way in and out of the kitchen. Also it wouldn‘t be able to go right in the corner, it would need a slim unit to the left of it so you can open it fully. So that would push it further towards the island and again that means it’s blocking the main walkway more. You could however push the island further towards the garden than shown in the plan, which would mean you have more space in that entrance area, and then it is more feasible to have the fridge along that left hand wall, as people can get past. Anyway, there are certainly options, it’s just worth planning the kitchen layout and checking it all works ergonomically before you commit to the window! As regards kitchen units under side return: you can have wall units or tall units under a side return, it depends how you make the roof. It’s true though that most people prefer to leave that wall clear of wall/tall units, usually that’s where a dining table or sofa goes. Here are some pictures of side returns with tall or wall units under. The first one looks the neatest as they have the roof part glass part solid and have tucked the units under the solid bit, but I suspect they have an unusually wide side return:...See MoreVictorian Terrace Layout Help Needed
Comments (1)Could you instead put the stairs along the other wall where the fireplace is in the dining room taking it up into bedroom 2? I am thinking that this would mean you could keep bedroom 1 and 3 with their own door (you would need to move bedroom 3 door) and create a bathroom and hall out of bedroom 2. The downside is you wouldn’t have a window in your bathroom but you will have one in the hall so you could have a glazed door into the bathroom (reeded glass is nice and would suit a 1930’s house). If you are serious about a loft conversion then (if you haven’t done so already) it would be worthwhile viewing the house again to see the loft. Take along someone who can advise who may also be able to advise about potential locations of stairs....See MoreVictorian terrace layout - creating inner courtyard in side return?
Comments (17)Hi @Hannah, sorry for slow reply. After discussing with builders have decided not to do full width extension at the back. Timings/builder availability/costs/drainage issues etc have meant it's far easier & cheaper to stick with much simpler add-on rear extension instead. Not what I really wanted to do but it's not going to be our forever home, so trying to be pragmatic about it! But still plan to use side return space as small courtyard / green space accessed from dining room. Good luck with yours if you do it!...See MoreVictorian terrace layout dilemma
Comments (9)Hi, It sounds like the front room has some lovely period features, so I can understand why you'd like to keep that as the adults movie night with a glass of wine type room! You could keep the kitchen as it is and open up the dining room and back reception so it all feels a lot more open plan. You could also incorporate more of the end of the hall corridor and add in a loo under the stairs, by making the kitchen accessed through the back room. It depends on how you see yourselves living - what would make life easiest and most enjoyable for you.
