Flooring Design Dilemma Hallways

What’s a good rug anti-slip?

We got a long (3.70m) and narrow runner and although it stays in place fairly well, it doesn’t feel 100% ‘steady’ on our wooden floor.

What would you advise?

IKEA sell some good anti slip mats to go under rugs that are like a rubberised mesh and can be cut to whatever size needed.

The rug looks too small to me for even that, Celerygirl. Something the size of what M.A.T.H posted would possibly work. Regarding whether the size matters; Design is about making things work in the best way. What matters is debatable. It could be argued that any structure functioning as shelter is adequate. As a tile importer and retailer, it's very rare for a porcelain tile to crack if installed properly. I'd not recommend juggling your Le Creuset to test the theory though... More and more tilers are using a decoupling matting such as Durabase to take as much movement out of the tile as possible. We also supply flexible adhesive and grout, so with a properly flat floor, it's rare for us to get a call from a grumpy client. We supply a lot of large format "infinity" look tiles, where you have an identically sized anti-slip External version of the Interior tile. Most are 8-9mm, so need a concrete base that mirrors the internal floor. If there is a 20mm version, then a sand & cement base can be used. As for kitchens, always tile the entire floor before the kitchen goes in. This means that the kitchen installer has a blank canvas to work on. It also means that the floor is completely sealed, so the chances of liquid ingress under the tiles (under the units) is pretty much nil. Finally, it also means that if you have any white goods that fail under the work surface, they can just be slid out, rather than having to remove what could be long an heavy lump of marble or granite to get them out. I also wouldn't add a runner, we had one in our last house and was forever slipping on it! I would just accessorise the shelf with a large display of stems or flowers, it also looks as if you have a plug socket (?) so a candlestick lamp with a patterned shade and maybe add a photo frame. Maybe a rattan umbrella stand for texture and 2/3 faux antlers or whatever you like up the stairs (think you need to click on the picture). I'd also add art at the top of the stairs and budget permitting I personally would swap the downlighter in front of the kitchen door for a pendant to create a focal point.

Strange, we have been advised by Karndean never ever to use a steam mop as they can get so hot they can melt the glue ( which does make sense since they do use something that looks like a steam mop to lift damaged tiles!)

Following this. I’ve tried sticky back grippers which didn’t work then I tried some rubbery sheeting which was cut to size and laid under the rug but all that did was bunch up under the rug and create a trip hazard. We threw both away and now have a slightly slippery rug.

I’ve used the rubber mesh stuff before - varying success dependent on the amount of traffic ... I have an outdoor rug that I got from the states that seems to stay put - it has what I can only describe as ‘plimsole’ sole type backing ... but no idea where you’d buy one over here - sorry. I wonder if adding stripes on the rear with a glue gun or silicone sealant might work ? Without ruining the rug ? Watching with interest !

I bought a pack of these just to try, as they were under £8, and have been pleasantly surprised at how firmly they’ve kept the rug in place on my wooden floor, and how, despite me thinking they’d be quite lumpy underneath, I’ve not noticed them. Rug gripper from Amazon
