Seeking clever paint ideas / colours for an open plan

I would love to hear thoughts on painting the walls / furniture in this open space to bring some more sophistication and atmosphere to the room.

I’m not planning to redo the kitchen in the short-term, so we need to stick to warm neutrals for the moment.

I am a big fan of the Little Greene ‘slaked lime’ range and that is in my mind... as is the similar but slightly cooler ‘Elephants Breath’ and ‘Charleston Grey’ colours from Farrow & Ball.

Budget dictates I go with Dulux or similar... and it needs to withstand some wear from kiddos.

I am thinking that the kitchen walls in the photo (4) which wrap around - could be in a dark taupe. I am also thinking that the hallway (5) could be in a darker neutral to make the rooms look bigger. Also, the bookshelves (2) could be in a mid taupe and trimmed out.

But there are so many walls!! It seems something very clever could be done and I’d love to hear ideas!! Many thanks for any ideas / suggestions.

I would paint the internal recesses of the shelving unit but before you pick a colour look at the types of items you are planning on displaying - this may give you a better steer on the colours to pick.

What a great tip about the heritage collection - thank you! I agree that the bookshelves are a good place to create interest.

I have found one or two photos showing clever use of paint - in much darker colours than I intend, but giving some ideas about how paint can be used in spaces with many angles and walls... I will post these as a starting point and see if they spark any ideas for me or for others.

Wow yes lots to waken up to and I'm so grateful for the help! Thanks so much! I tried mforr to find one o those room colouring things for a shop here in the uk and whilt you can do it with dulux paint brand, it didnt seem to like my iPad so need to get onto it on my laptop! Having slept on it I'm thinking I like the idea of doing the kitchen only in colour, and then having highlights of the colour in the LR with cushions perhaps. We considered curtains too but I'm not sure if it would crowd the LR. We are sure that the coffee table is too big also, but I love it (it has a glass top and we can present things in the drawer below). We also have no dining table so this is our only space for setting out food! I'm still liking the green, but the yellow goes well too. We have a tea/coffee jars on our kitchen work top (might be just visible in the pictures) which are green yellow and grey, so if I bring these along to the DIY shop they could colour match those for me. (Along with the list you sent me too mforr!) I will def be back on to show you all the results!! :)

I love the idea of the duck egg blue and yellow adding a pop of colour to the white. I'd play it up a bit more and go for deep and bold jewel tones of teal, sapphire, plum and burgundy, mixed with a few of the more delicate neutral pillows you have. I think little pops of gold would do nicely with the jewel tones and match the yellow you already have. I'd definitely continue the idea of the sheepskin throw and maybe introduce a similar rug to bring some warmth and texture to the floor -perhaps a warmer beige. I think large black and white photographs of your preference would go nicely on the blank wall -perhaps flanked by some floating bookshelves to showcase any decorations that might bring more warmth and personality to the room.

Hi Hanifa, The first thing I would suggest is to work out which direction the patio doors are facing, and take account of the quantity and quality of the light. This is so important! Use the compass app on your phone for this. Colours look different depending on your room orientation. If your room is south facing for example, then you'll get a decent amount of light all day, so you can choose pretty much any colour scheme. The room looks pretty narrow, so I'd avoid using bright, saturated colours. Stick to lighter shades, especially on the feature wall. The existing grey/green walls look ok. It also links the kitchen and dining area which looks good. You could divide the dining area from the lounge with a few plants. Try a Palm plant like a Kentia Palm (B+Q). They doesn't need much light, and look great in any room. I think the curtains would work better in a simple, white fabric. If you don't need to block out extremely bright light, then use a voile, muslin or other sheer fabric. Also, be careful adding too much grey. You don't want the room looking too drab. Buy testers, paint on large pieces of paper or card, and place around the space. Check the colours at different times of the day, to better help you decide on the right choice. Update: We painted the kitchen in soft taupe - it’s a warm mauve colour that picks up the tiles. We painted a ‘feature’ space between the shelves coastline - a sand-coloured neutral. And the long boxed section on the ceiling, we painted it a fresh white to match the ceiling. Eventually, we will refresh the cream walls in a warm white with taupe undertones. Very happy with the results so far.
