Sound proof plasterboard and weight issue

Hi folks. I recently purchased some sound proofing plasterboard and am a bit concerned about the weight. 28kg boards & 1200mm square. I am trying to fix six boards i.e 3 wide by 2 high. They have a rubber back and look pretty good.. Its a party wall at first floor level which is drylined. So already plasterboarded and sounds like timber battens to a masonry wall. I didn't want to remove the current plasterboard wall and having discussed with the supplier, I understand that reasonable results can be achieved by fixing the boards to the plasterboard. So given advice on fixings and reasonably happy about the process. My concern is with adding the extra weight to the pre-existing plasterboard wall. Have searched the internet but nothing really about adding weight. And these are heavy. I appreciate that perhaps taking down the current plasterboard might be the best option but am trying to avoid if possible. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I’m not a builder, so may be way off, but if original plasterboard is attached to wooden stud work, I think you’d need to attach the new boards to the same stud work? You can use a little hand held scanner thing to locate the stud work (think they might even be called stud finders?!) You’d then need longer screws....

i would personally install new battens as would create a small void giving you that additional sound barrier

Whilst I recognise there's a few tradespeople on here bemoaning fussy clients I have to say my biggest regrets when renovating my house was not being specific enough with trades! We had an electrician put in an extra light switch in the hall to control both the downstairs and upstairs lighting. He put it in a good 10-15cm lower than the other switch further along the same wall which looked completely ridiculous. Made him move it in line with the other one much to his annoyance. Another similar incident was with a vertical column rad for the kitchen - whilst I was specific enough this time to ask it be centered to the wall it was on, he installed it much higher than needed with about 30cm of pipe sticking out the bottom! It would have looked much better in line with the doorframe adjacent. Had to learn to live with that one. We had engineered wood floors put in upstairs - the fitter used the shortest wall in the smallest room to take a plumbline from. When it came into the hall it was obviously on a complete wonk. By this point I'd gotten a bit better at speaking up and ensuring we actually got what was needed (and paid for!). He had to take it up and re-lay using the hall as the plumbline. Looked so much better but he was extremely annoyed! After all this I learned to use masking tape to direct exactly where pipes/light switches/trim should be fitted so there was no room for 'interpretation'. I also forced myself to speak up more and advocate for what I really wanted. That said I'm a designer by trade so I generally know what I want and how to make it look good but was definitely a bit too shy to contradict trades in the beginning!

For many years, we had a similar set up with exercise equipment, tumble dryer, extra freezer and storage in the garage. We used garage floor paint to eliminate the dust from the floor shortly after we moved in. We just put an offcut of carpet on most of the floor, but rubber will work as well. The biggest difference to draughts etc was changing from an up and over garage door to an electric roller door. I’m sure extra insulation on walls wouldn’t hurt though.

Depending on the condition of the window, you may be able to just change just the glass so it is double glazed. The process to do this is called bi-glass. If you decide to go the stid wall route, then bear in mind that a single skin of 12.5mm plasterboard on each side with internal sound insulation gives you a 42 dB rating and if you have a double skin on each side with sound insulation, then you get a rating of 54 dB. This is the difference between hearing murmurs and nothing at all. Many of the builders that I have come across also tend to use timber as the internal studs, which in my opinion is very bizarre as metal studs are easy to install and are designed specifically for these types of walls. What i more they allow the insulation to be tucked in and sound transference is not an issue. The thickness of a standard single skin wall is 75mm and the double skin is 100mm. AS mentioned above these walls are easy to remove in the future and reinstate to the original. Best of luck.

I would make some exploratory holes to see if there really is timber behind to screw into, and what size. Please let us know how much difference they make after installation as I have those in mind for a project too.
