Show us your narrow kitchens please!

After a knock through I’ll be looking at a kitchen/diner space of around 8.5m x 3.2m. Quite a long narrow space which no matter how much a trawl for images can’t actually gauge examples with the narrow width (you never kind of know when looking at images).

With that in mind I would love to see finished examples of renovations or just your general kitchen with that similar width dimension.

I either plan to have units across both walls, or (I know a lot will say too narrow) just one wall with cabinets and a long island in the middle with a little overhang for stools, leaving the wall behind the island free of anything (apart from deco).

I know an island in this space is highly controversial but just want to explore all avenues! Pictures of ideas I have are below, I just don’t know their total width.

Don’t forget if width is a problem then have standard base units on one side and wall units on the base the other side. So instead of 2 x 600mm deep you will have one side with 600mm deep and the other with 300mm deep. It’s an option for you.

Thanks for the reply Daisy. Even though your idea is quite ingenious, width isn’t an issue if we were to have units on both walls as this is the layout we have now (C shaped currently). What I’m really not sure on is if there will be enough clearance around an island to go single-wall, with an island, instead of the opposite wall of units.

Ideally you will have 1m all the way around an island some people have a little less but I think it gets tight as soon as you open the fridge or dishwasher. So if you have base units against the wall this basically means you are looking at a skinny island which probably isn’t what you envisaged.

However there are lots of other plans that you haven’t considered.
You could have both the sink and the hob on a deeper island and then demi height (but reduced depth) storage against the wall.

Or you could introduce a small peninsula to the u shaped kitchen you have now.

Or you could add interest by adding depth to one side

Thanks for the reply Jonathan. Yep that 1m rule glares at me every time i look into it. If I subtract the 600mm for the single run of units, 900mm gap between island and went 900mm for island with overhang for stools, it would leave 800 behind the island as a small walkway with no units to worry about......that’s my thought process anyway!

I have thought about the peninsula route too, I don’t know if it would disrupt the clean flow i’m looking for leading to the garden though.

Am following as I also want to plan a new kitchen - ours is 3.4m wide and I don’t think we can fit an island along with a run of wall units... I think we need units on either side and maybe a peninsula

My little kitchen is lot narrower and smaller than yours at 2.5m wide x 4.6m long. The kitchen end is galley style and the two sides leave a gap of 1.2m, so pretty snug. If I’m cooking I prefer others not to open the fridge or washing machine! The other end houses a sideboard and sofa.

I think I’m struggling to see the usefulness of a peninsula personally. We are a family of 4 so wouldn’t all be able to sit at it, or even as a 3 while one is cooking. The other disadvantage I see is it doesn’t seem to offer an awful lot of additional counter space. We have a decent length to the room so could extend the counter further if we had to, rather than having a peninsula break the clean line......Personal preference I just can’t take to them.

Jonathan - I do love the depth idea, gives a real sense of style and practicality, especially the first picture!.....Thank you.

Sonia thank you for the image of your kitchen, as you say at 1.2m that does look snug still so it is hard to imagine less than that gap between a counter and an island! I think the only way I could achieve it is if I made sure things like fridge an oven we’re not in it’s direct path

I don't have a suggestion for layout but maybe you could go into your garden / an open space and lay out your proposed layouts with masking tape / cardboard boxes and actually walk around and see what you think as it's so hard to envision what will be enough space for you personally

Jessa61 - Yes that’s a good idea and something i’ll likely set up in the living room (similar space) before finalising the design. I know when you have an idea in your head you’ve got the horse blinkers on so be nice to hear from people who actually live with the dimensions and what I envisage, as I don’t want to be the person that avoids all advice then regrets
