Black bathroom taps- do they show all the dirt??

My husband and I are divided on black taps (sink and shower) for our bathroom renovation, I think they look sleek and modern and he says they will show all the dirt and limescale (we live in London = hard water). Does anyone have advice, experience or regrets?

I have been asking myself the same question. Unfortunately I don’t know the answer to it but my thoughts are the same as your husband. Water marks always show on a dark surface and limescale is light coloured.

I think if you’ve got hard water then maybe choose something else? Limescale is nightmare even with chrome taps let alone black.

Will you need to move any of the plumbing/replace any of the piping/waste outlets? If not... Then it should be relatively straight forward, rip out old fittings, get a plasterer in to plaster the elements that will be on show (ie not behind tiles), then just find a local firm to do the tiling and bathroom install as one job. I had to do a fair bit of prep myself as some of the piping needed to be sunk in the walls, routed under the floor so i had to chase out channels in the wall and also run piping through the floor joists... After that though i got a plasterer to re-skim where required, a fitter to fit the shower then tiled the walls and floor and then finished fitting of sink and toilet and heated towel rail...

Update -- my plumber finally returned. Not sure what he did while here, but he told me again it wasn't working -- then he did some work on a radiator which had a small leak. We were having a long discussion about options on pumps, new showers, taps etc and I read out the installation guide and he tried it again, and suddenly it worked. It is bizarre as I don't know how many times i tried it previously. My friend who works in construction ALSO called earlier today and tried it several times to no avail. It must have been extremely stiff or perhaps the plumber realised some airlock whilst fixing the radiator since I think water pressure is much stronger since he went. Thanks for everyones help -- i learned lots on plumbing and a valuable lesson to take out the installation manuals myself and not trust that trades men know everything!!! I feel like celebrating!!

Although I particularly like those sparkly black tiles, and I do agree, sometimes black can give a glamorous feel to a room, I feel as though an all-black bathroom would make it feel significantly smaller, which is why I chose white. White can open up a room a little better, giving the impression that the room is a little bigger (despite being a nightmare when it comes to showing dirt). This bathroom we designed is mainly white with hints of black like the bathtub and a feature wall: the best of both worlds.

Hello fullrenov, With so many finishes and colours to choose from it can be quite a feat getting all the materials to match... Things like pop up waste and bottle trap etc can be forgotten in the excitement of it all... but..... before panicking about it, consider if things are in certain areas... Could they team with chrome? I like Nickel.. Do you see the waste and could you live with a chrome one? Ie if it is a deep bowl such as the one pictured where you only see it when looking directly into the bowl. The way to look at this is to perhaps introduce a bit more chrome into the equation and then perhaps it will seem deliberately designed around the two finishes.. With the screen you really want it not to stand out so much especially if its fitted onto a light wall/tiles... So consider where you can introduce chrome or silvery accessories and move the chrome element on to include mirrors etc... A few images to give you an idea that black or dark metal fittings are style on tap! :))

Thought about taps shower in brushed gunmetal ? - still dark but won’t show the limescale as much

Or you could get a water softener? Then you wouldn't get limescale. We had one in our previous house and it was so nice.

Yes limescale shows easily on black taps. Just means more cleaning. But if you’re in a harder water area I’d say definitely no!

Sounds like another fad that hasn’t been followed through. I fell for brass taps the first time around. Never again!

I would add to the limescale issue that they are really fashionable at the moment. In a few years time they may not be so you could always add some black in the way of a mirror or baskets etc.
