Flat roof lantern/windows opening

I'm getting conflicting information on having opening in either a sky lantern or flat roof window? Some sellers won't provide them, stating they tend to fail and eventually cause leaks, whereby some sell them?
We were thinking if getting a 1100x800mm Raylux flat roof window with opening situated above he cooking area to help remove cooking smells but don't won't the opening to cause leaks years down the line.
Any recommendations/suggestions/thoughts - all would be greatly appreciated!
