Revamp this living room

So I've just bought this new house and am wanting to totally overhaul the living room.

Me and my partner are thinking potentially wooden floors and L shape sofa's but are really clueless when it comes to modern, stylish living space. Nothing in the room will stay other than the fire place & mantelpiece

I'd really welcome any advice or guidance

can you make a sketch of the space with measurements on, and mark on doors/windows.

You mention L-shaped sofas.....as in more than 1? I think a couple of 2/3 seater sofas might be better, depending on room size.
Apart from sofas/TV is there anything else that is to go in this space?

Looks like there is a space round the right....where does that go?

Where is the door into the room?

Hi again it was me that replied to the last one. I really like the room the green is lovely and I don't think the furniture is outdated. It just seams dark that's maybe why you think it's outdated. I'd possibly introduce another colour maybe a duck egg blue and add feature paper on the chimney breast where you have it painted brown you can get some lovely wallpaper. Then add cushions and maybe a throw over the sofa with the blue and green colours. Play with different patterns in your accessories. And defiantly keep the dog! Haha! I'll try and find some pictures for you to kind of see what I'm talking about

Hi Beckie. You can put orange and yellow together, I've found a pic for you which should work with your neutral base. I like the way they've used a couple of darker accents to break up the warm tones. You could perhaps use the orange as the secondary colour so go for curtains with orange in with mustard as your accent, will see if I can find a couple of pics. Another colour that works really well with grey and mustard is teal or petrol blue. I've found a couple more geometric papers. I also like colourhappys idea of a textured paper, there are lots of faux grasscloth ones around and I like the rather expensive blue one I've pictured but the colour isn't true in this pic

There aren’t many sofa shops left, but I recently went into Furniture Village and they had some nice stuff as did DFS, but some of it was awful so pick carefully. John Lewis have some nice stuff, but I just read they have temporarily closed all their stores........brands that seem to be good quality are G Plan and Parker Knoll. You need to google search your nearest stockist. There are a lot of newer companies like Sofology that seem to be popular but I’ve no experience of them. My sister bought her last sofa from Fishpools and she said they had lovely sofas.

Morning Ellie, thanks for reaching out!!

I've attached the floor plan of the area of the house in question.

We are looking at turning the study into a playroom for the kids and have other areas of the house for hosting etc so really looking at this area as a place to relax and chill of a night, hopefully without too many of the kids toys making their way in :)

The dimes of the lounge are: 18'11"x12'10"(max) (x(max)) (5.77x3.91(max) (x(max))

Really appreciate any suggestions.

Nice big space. What looks do you like? Bright and airy or dark and moody? Modern and contemporary or something more traditional?

I love both but I think as the first room we walk into the house you'd want it to be warm and light.
