Renovating Fireplaces Living Rooms

Original Victorian Fireplace?

We’ve just moved into our house which was built around 1900/1905 - do you think this is an original fireplace? It’s a solid dark wood underneath with layers of think paint on top.

Something about it doesn’t look original Victorian, maybe it’s a later reproduction? But I might be wrong!

There is a little show at the Cherry Tree village (just south of Southgate) that has a lot of this type of fireplace for sale. My daughter bought one which was initially rusty and the shop made it beautiful. They also offered her a good choice of tile to go in the sides.

Dear Jennifer, i agree with the other commentators the fireplaces look original. They might be marble but are more likely to be marbleised slate. But the tiles look very new. I am sure originally the fireplace would have had a caste iron insert. I have a large marbleised slate fireplace in my lounge, and another in the cellar which had been removed from the dining room by previous owners. Although large my fireplaces would have had caste iron inserts, both removed before I bought the house. The only thing that appears strange in your photographs is the location of the fireplaces, especially the top one which appears to be located in a corner. Has this room been divided, the wall to the right of your picture may be new, butted up against the chimney stack. The skirtings also appear new, which would confirm this. You don't say whether or not you are concerned how dominant these features are. I was concerned for some time as to how to integrate my fireplace into my white and Ivory colour scheme, however a brushed steel insert, firegarde has helped. I'll send photographs if that would help.

For a vintagey feel and with tall Victorian windows, Anthropologie have some lovely curtains. I particularly like these, they are called Petra and are velvet with a contrasting coloured edge.

My gut feeling is that they are probably not original. The hearths don’t look quite right to me - that’s quite a modern way of doing a hearth. I live in a Victorian house and we reinstated our fireplaces and made similar hearths with limestone slabs. (Like yours) - our original hearths were inset and level with the floor.

Yes, I have this niggleing feeling theres somthing dodgy about it, but the carving is finer then I'd expect for a modern one. Though those bits sticking out at the sides look odd. never seen a fireplace with those and bits of moulding just stuck here and there.

The side bits are definitely what’s throwing us! We haven’t opened up the middle yet but by the sounds of it it’s been bricked up behind there so not hopeful

I’m no expert but I’m with Sonia. Something doesn’t look right.

Bit tricky to judge from just this photo, but it seems a little too perfect to be a true period piece.

Is this the only fireplace in the house?
