House exterior - where do we start!!!

First post here - please be kind! We’ve bought a do-er upper and will be at it for a while I think. The exterior is needing a lot of love and I’m lost with where to start. Paint the exterior, paint / replace the door, what do we even do about the never ending red brick walks and drives! We’ll probably do something drastic with the drives / front garden at some point at the bricks are failing but what would be a good place to start to make the house look a little more loved? Colour scheme ideas welcome! I’m wondering about painting the exterior cream/off white with a blue/green door....

I think a lick of masonry paint would be a good idea. You could go down the cream/white route, but I wonder if a pale terracotta would look nice? A grey-green door seems to sit well with the abundance of red pavers. The wall on the right with the missing capping is quite high. I wonder if it could be lowered a little, but I understand you don’t want anyone tipping over the edge! Here’s some colours. Of course you may hate the pale terracotta so I’ve added a sage green which is a Sandtex masonry paint shade.

Oh both are lovely! We have some houses down the road that are terracotta! Thank you really appreciate the suggestions!

Thanks, Donut. It has taken a long time, but we are finally getting towards the end. We decided to play it safe in the end, and installed hardwood sash windows that come factory spray painted in a warm white. They look really lovely, but now in contrast, the exterior render looks so awful that we will have to do that now! (Bit back to front as this should have been done before the windows, but things don't always work out as they should!). Also, keep meaning to remove that nasty little black plant pot which I only ever seem to notice on photos...

We moved from a 2000 new build to a 1906 build. It is a very different way of living in a house. Before you call/hire anyone, do your own research. Find out how your house was constructed. Is it solid or cavity wall (more likely to be solid, ours is). You have double glazing but how many chimneys are in the house and how draughty is it? These houses are not meant to be hermetically sealed, they can suffer dreadfully with condensation and damp if they are insulated incorrectly. We don't use the chimneys so have invested in a chimney sheep to block the draughts but still keep the breathable aspect. https://www.chimneysheep.co.uk/ Really thick curtains on the windows help enormously as does keeping the internal doors closed over most of the time. If you can't afford blanket lined curtains, an easy trick is to get cheap fleece blankets from somewhere like The Range and sew/velcro them into your existing curtains. Careful of fire regs though, we don't do candles as we have cats and they are wonderful yet stupid, so no open flames for us! Roof space insulation is a good start, again, research breathable insulation. Lining your walls with 10cm of internal insulation is a terrible idea if you want to keep the original features in a house. However if you are gutting it because there are no features left, get someone in who has a proven track record of old house renovations. Ask to see their portfolio and you also shouldn't be able to book them for at least 6 months if they are good! There is a Haynes manual for Victorian to Edwardian construction in which you may find some info on the construction of you house, though yours is more interwar period. It's a good read nonetheless. There are loads of sites on the internet which give info on house building, This one describes the various periods with how to recognise them. We often go for a walk around our area and try to guess the house age (and this was before lock down!) https://fet.uwe.ac.uk/conweb/house_ages/flypast/print.htm These are just my thoughts from having experienced the joy (and pain) of owning an older house. Get used to having to fix stuff, don't worry unduly if hairline cracks are appearing as the house naturally shifts (cos they do and it is usually ok!) Get a structural survey done on the house. Also get used to a much higher fuel bill, plus investigate HEPA fans that can help reduce particles (we got one for our bedroom and it has worked well). Keep asking on here for help and advice because the community is super and helpful and has helped me transform my tired old house into a home that I love. Oh and live in it for at least 6 months before deciding to do any decoration. The house will tell you what it wants. :-) I wish you all the best in your new home.

Are you likely to extend in the next few years and therefore want a cheap solution “for now”? Or are you unlikely to extend in the foreseeable future so want a permanent better solution (more expensive than a temporary fix but not as much as a new extension)? For a cheapish “for now” solution I would suggest putting a fridge where there currently is a storage console table in the pictures - ie next to the (?) coat rack. You probably have space to put some extra kitchen storage around it too. That way it‘s a bit more accessible than in the utility, and you can have a dryer and more space in the utility. Is that your dining table, or the previous owners? It’s pretty giant and swapping to a smaller table would give you more space to put in a dresser or sideboard or other storage somewhere near it. Or even a built in wall of storage across the wall with the sitting room (if you don’t mind blocking the internal window). For a more permanent solution, I would agree with the suggestion of moving the whole kitchen to the other side of the room. You could have an L shape kitchen along the sitting room wall and side wall, with an island. Much more kitchen than currently. Then I’d probably put the dining table in the middle of the room and make the ex-kitchen area into a snug with small sofa. I‘m not suggesting any changes to the utility purely because from the plan it looks as though it’s got some serious supporting walls around it (perhaps the original end wall of the house) so it will be very expensive to change it. If I’m wrong about that, however, it could make sense to knock through into the utility to buy yourself more kitchen space, and then carve a new utility off the back end of the very large study.

I’ve done a albeit crude drawing on photo edit mark up. I would block up the current dining bay window. This allows space for a 2 seater sofa. By blocking up the utility room door and widening the kitchen window for large doors, the room is lighter. You can also put in a kitchen island. Relocating the utility by taking a slice off your lounge improves storage. Your lounge becomes a more usable snug.

Another thing you could do is change the flat door canopy for a pitched one. It just seems to add more character?

Adding exterior lighting and/or decorative plants would make it feel more homely and inviting.
