Inspiration needed for understair space!

This area becomes a dumping ground, which is a shame because there's a lovely bit of space here, but as it's south facing, it also lets in lots of beautiful sunlight into our otherwise northfacing living areas. I've looked at lots of photos on House but can't see anything similar to what we have, any ideas for how to use this better please? thanks

Could it be a reading nook? Put an armchair there with a cosy cushion, especially if the sun shines there. I too struggled to find under stair ideas with open tread stairs but I found these on Pinterest. I’m not sure about the last one, looks a little cluttered!

ooh thanks Sonia, some lovely ideas there, I like the idea of a reading nook or possibly the open cubes - as long as they didn't get filled up with junk 😁

If you want to keep it open, you've got problems as the others have noted. First things that come to mind if you can't afford the bespoke option are: (i) shoe racks - Homebase do some nice wooden ones with slatted flat surfaces that look cedar-like; (ii) rows of coat hooks - either get nice individual ones which are statements in themselves or look at the wooden board ones where there are several hooks pre-fitted. You need more than one row, and at different heights to allow little people to access them easily without you having to hang/unhang coats for them; (iii) pull-out trolley - for what exactly? Make sure you've got a purpose for it, otherwise you are blocking access to the necessaries (shoes, coats) and having to pull it out every time you go near the space; (iv) if you tidy it up well, you might get away with good storage without doors, especially if budget simply doesn't allow. Alternatively, is there an elegant way to set back a small pole into the recess to avoid that lovely stair curve and hang some fabric - even a panel of voile - perhaps on a portiere rod (i.e. one that can swing back on a hinge, rather than having fabric yanked back and forth - or just left open all the time, because a fixed rod is too much hassle)?

I'm not sure that's going to be a future selling point, unless it has doors on it that you open up and close off so that you can't see it. Also, it would need to be easily removed for the next purchaser as it's something unique to you. Not wrong, just different. Bars can look a little tacky, so you'll need to go for something tasteful ! You don't say what shape the space is. We did a house a couple of years ago that had quite a large space under the stairs, so you could have something like that with doors on to close it off and put it out of sight, plus leave a seperate cupboard for the hoover etc as below.

Honestly.....I love it, did when I seen it being stenciled! As said it you, unique is an understatement as is the statement, knock on the door ‘ can you just confirm what number this is?’ Lol You can be a sheep or you can be the little black one in the car advert! Thanks for your comments, just wanted to make sure our proposed layout wasn't too impractical before going back to architect to suggest it. Jen - thanks, I'd missed the door hanging as that's how it currently is but architect has suggested changing to other side as you suggest. OnePlan - we were debating between us whether to have hob or sink on the island and thought having hob would be the less messy option, but I see your point about seating behind hob, especially as we have a 1 year old so want to make things as child friendly as possible so will rethink this. We did consider having shower room where utility is but want to retain access from front to garden via garage as we don't have external access. Picasso - thanks will consider whether have it as a wet room instead, we plan to have underfloor heating anyway so hope that might help drying the floors.

Yes open cubing needs to be kept tidy otherwise it can just add to the clutter. Hopefully more ideas will be shared by others on Houzz! 👍

I have an open tread staircase which is not as good looking as yours (doesn't let any light in etc) I hate it and am looking to have it boxed in asap - anything stored underneath gets covered in dust and dirt from the footfall overhead ( there's only 3 of us and no pets) so I can never fathom how people have a sofa etc under open tread stairs?
The best storage I ever had under there was a clean lines type sideboard with doors. One wipe over and it was dust free (for a day or two!!) but putting a lamp, trinkets etc on top was a waste of energy.
So for me, def a no to any type of open storage/cubes - you need something with doors (or deep flat fronted drawers?) Or if you're not desperate for extra storage, what about a lovely big plant that you can pop in the shower to keep it looking clean and healthy?

The ottoman hides away all our shoes and bits and pieces plus somewhere to sit when putting on your shoes.

oh my goodness, I love the idea of a little garden! I think I could squeeze in an stoarge/ sit-on ottoman perpendicular to the window so it's against the wall on the left so there's plenty of head room and still have room deeper under the stairs for some greenery. thanks all

You have a lot of stuff there, as you say its a dumping ground. But if you use this space for something else, where would you then dump all the stuff that normally goes here?

Would you definitely not just box it/a section of it as storage?

Ellie, you make a very good point and things can only be put away if they have a place to go... time for some more decluttering and where we can create better storage solutions elsewhere 🤔
