Cost of tiling patio???

Hi folks,

We have received a quote to tile our small patio (20 square metres). The builders suggested they place the porcelain tiles on top of the paving stones, but with some insulation in between to level out the ground.

The quote is £1200. This is about £700 more than I was expecting!! Anyone else have an idea of what this should more or less cost? It includes the materials of adhesive, grout and insulation... (Everything except the tiles)

Sounds cheap. I had the decking on my small patio (13 sq m) removed, type 1 laid (it’s like tiny rubble which stabilises the patio) and porcelain tiles laid, including a special drain cover and grid draining near the house. It took 2 men 8 days to complete it, including the removal of the old deck and base. My costs were

Materials (type 1, tile adhesive, drains and drain cover). £500
Labour (8 days). £1600
Total. £2100

The paving I bought separately at £420. Granted the removal of the old deck took a couple of days so that was an extra cost.

Never lay slabs on top of existing slabs, you don't know what the base is underneath. That is a real cowboy job. You should always remove the old patio and put in a new base of MOT Type1 like Sonia had done. £1200 is way to cheap, you should be looking at somewhere around £3000 for the job to be done properly including supplying the materials. Just the porcelain alone you would be looking at £700 for 20 sq mtrs.

Three to four tons of sub base, two tons sharp sand, cement, primer etc, etc.

It's not worth getting it done cheap, it won't last and is false economy.

I'd get a qualified landscaper to give you a proper quote that is itemised so you can see where the cost is.

Thank you for your response. I've had two quotes and they were very different! I am in London so probably top end of pricing then however wanted to get another opinion to hopefully shed some more light on average pricing.

It’s a nice design! Tough choice on the tiles because I like both. I’d carry on the wooden tiles to the edge of the step so it looks streamlined but it’s entirely your choice. Perhaps you can lay the samples out again when your raised beds are done? One thing I notice with the raised beds is I don’t think the one one the left and the curved one will be wide enough. Not sure what you’re using to build them but when you’ve taken into account the thickness of the walls it will leave a lot less then 50cm width for the soil and plants. I’d have at least 40cm for the soil width (better for the plants) and an extra say 10cm for the wall each side but this is assuming they’re brick or block construction. Love the sunken bed idea:)

Have a look at porcelain. It comes in outdoor and indoor grade. Outdoor is thicker (20mm) and non slip. Indoor is smoother for ease of cleaning. It comes in all the stone colours and mimics natural stone very well. Also comes in wood effect. I have the outdoor tiles on my patio. The only drawback is they do get dirty very easily and can be difficult to clean which I think may be due to the non slip finish?

Hi, We are in the process of constructing a large garden cabin for a customer which is to be clad in vertically fixed Canadian Cedar. If you have deep pockets this would look modern and easy on the eye + gives a nod to the cladding you already have on the house.

Just to clarify, the quote didn't include the cost of the tiles. They said the tiles I suggested were too thin, while the current slabs (which we have lifted up to see what is underneath) are thick.

Anyway, I have changed my mind to get thicker (20mm) porcelain slabs, so the current ones will come up!

Why is a new base needed when I take up the current slabs, if I am replacing them with similar slabs?

Outdoor porcelain paving should be 20mm thick, not 10mm like indoor. To prevent future movement you need a good solid foundation that is also frost resistant. The old base may not be of a sufficient depth or of the right material and if the paving has a guarantee and the base is wrong then wave goodbye to the guarantee. Marshalls and Bradstone give a 10 year guarantee on their products and a 5 year on installation with terms and conditions.

It's not worth the risk of contaminated sub base for the cost of replacing it.
