Stuck for ideas on my sitting room alcoves

I’ve recently bought a house and I’m not sure what to do with the current alcoves , preferably I want to rip them out but im not sure what to replace them with , the fireplace walls no longer white as seen in the photo that I’ve attached ,its now grey

Hi,

I think it would be a real shame to rip those alcovers out. It looks like you have helpful storage in the bottom sections.

Maybe consider some recessed lighting and shelves to make better use of the space or a large picture frame or mirror recessed towards the back with decor pieces in front.

Think shades of teal and blue! Furnish will accesories in darker shades of grey and blue for a cool look. Or go bold with mustard and blend with tones of blue and grey. Just like the colour combination in these pillows from etsy.

Hi. It's quite difficult to work out the whole room from the pics and exactly what your style is. If the room can take it I'd go for a mid tone grey on the walls so there isn't as much contrast with the sofas but if not a pale but warm grey. Swap the rug for something plain but with texture so a natural coloured sisal for instance so it doesn't make the room feel smaller with such a contrast between rug and floor. I'd use orange as the accent colour so maybe grey patterned curtains with orange cushions and additional artwork. It may also be worth considering blinds rather than curtains to give the sofa some space. I would also pick another colour like green or teal etc to liven it up for just a couple of accessories. Use a mixture of textured and patterned cushions. put something in the middle of the dining table be it a plant or flowers or vase etc. also consider the lighting as table and floor lamps will add a cosy feel. Can you move the dining table so it's central under the light and add a feature pendant (maybe with some orange!)? The existing art looks as if it is hung a little high so would rehang a few inches lower and align over the sofa. Is it a table in front of the tv? Can that be moved in front of the sofa and accessorised? A plant and a couple of piles of books are cheap accessories! Is there anyway to move the furniture to cover the ŵall sockets or maybe disguise with a potted plant?

How about some bespoke 3D shelving, constructed from MDF. This would be relatively easy and quick for a carpenter to complete and the alcoves could be sized to suit. I'm a fan of subtle integrated lighting, but perhaps not to every shelf. I would check the requirements of the electric fire in terms of proximity to combustible materials. Regards, Simon

Create a trend board. Look at everything that inspires you and group about 3 or 4 things together to include a fabric you might have seen, colours you like or perhaps a colour of an item you are keeping like a favourite chair or fireplace. Consider what flooring you might like or, if like me you have children and pets, what is practical!. Is it a sunny room where a crystal chandelier would sparkle day or night or one that faces north that might need some extra light? Lots to consider but fun gathering all the ideas together. Start anywhere. Once you have started the ideas will come gushing out!
