Garden revamp/redesign

Hi All
I really want to revamp my garden. It's very messy right now. We have a table and chairs that I want to continue using. Here is what I'm thinking:
1. additional seating in the form of benches against the wall
2. some sort of shelving (again against the wall) for growing herbs)
3. chimenea for heating
I'd really appreciate some feedback and suggestions because I dont have a clear vision in terms of how I want this to look

Hi, could you post some photos from the other side(s) of the garden as well? So we can see what you're looking at from the house? And which way is it facing? What is the sunniest spot? (for your herbs you need sun) Also, rough dimensions would be useful :-)

When you say seating by the wall, do you mean the house wall?

There are many great ways you can re-design your garden, you just need a bit of inspiration! Without seeing your garden it can be difficult to advise specifically but I normally advise the following as a starting point. Garden Mirrors. Outdoor mirrors are a fantastic way to create more space in your garden, reflect the light and create a new style in your space. Depending on the style of your garden you could try a modern design seen here or a characteristic one seen here Garden screening. You mention your garden is a 'concrete jungle'. One way to add more texture to your garden is to apply a screening along walls and fences to create a completely different atmosphere. This is very simple and easy to do and we have a huge range to inspire you here Vertical planting. If you're short on space vertical planting is an excellent way to make the most of the available space. Plant a tree, or a climber that might also help to disguise a wall. By growing upwards you will also create a richer texture in your garden. Sail Shade. One other super easy way to lift some colour into your garden and protect yourself from the sun is a sail shade. Depending on which colour you choose it can really help to add some character and give a completely different feel to your garden. Hi there Judy, I agree with the garden design guru. This path cutting the garden longitudinally all the way down makes your garden look much narrower than it really is. I would work on diving your garden in sections that are parallel to the house, which would be more suitable to this shape. These divisions could either be done in straight lines or with curves, depending on the style that you prefer. Please have a look at this past design that I made for a rectangular garden diving it in curved sections so that you have an idea: https://www.houzz.co.uk/hznb/projects/low-maintenance-coastal-mediterranean-inspired-garden-pj-vj~6453035 From the picture I understood that you have a patio at the house level just outside the house and then the lawn space at an upper level. Maybe making a lawn/borders (with robust shrubs) area on the part of the lawn closest to the house and patio for your dog and then doing another seating area at the bottom of the garden (this could be just a nice garden bench/pod tucked among planting or another patio or decked area surrounded by planting, depending on your preference) would be a good idea. My only strong advice would be not to forget to match the planting to the conditions in your garden (i.e. is the site exposed? is the soil heavy? what is the aspect of the site of planting?) as it will guarantee that your planting is future proof and looks lush and is more resistant to pests and diseases. Hi, I think the block paving is rather nice, just needs weeding and a scrub. I had decking by my back door and it looked great at first but then got very slippery when wet and in the winter. It was softwood and started to look scruffy by year 8. It then started to rot in the corners so last year we had it removed and replaced by porcelain. However, I’m sure hardwood decks fare better. There is a lovely reddish brown deck wood that Charlie Dimmock often uses. No idea what it is called but it looks lovely. i would ask several landscapers for quotes. Landscapers and builders are so booked up at the moment, or at least the good ones are! You could also ask a Garden Designer to design a plan for you, but you carry out the work. Landscaping is hard work and needs doing properly otherwise it can sink and become uneven. Decking certainly is easier if you have basic carpentry skills. The paving would look less car parky if you had more planting. A mistake many people made is to landscape right up to the fence, leaving no gap for planting. If you removed some of the block paving along the fence (say 2-3 feet) add good compost and creating a wonderful soil for plants. Hi Caroline, Of course :) this is the view we see from the house. This aspect is SE facing so lots of sun all day.
In terms of dims the patio area is 510cm x 430cm
If you look at one of the photos facing the house.
The width to the left of the French doors is 290cm.
The width to the right of the French doors is 670cm.
Depth is 87cm.

Hi Sonia, I was initially thinking additional seating against the house wall but looking at the bird's eye view pic, im not so sure now. I'd like to make the garden look as nice as poss

Hi Im, what a lovely woodland you look onto. I bet you get lots of wildlife. I think a couple of benches (I love the Lutyens style ones) against the house will be well used. The nearer seating is to the house, the more people use it. I also think the washing line is a bit of an eyesore and I would swap it for a retractable line which stores away into it own container when not in use. My last recommendation which will be more of an effort is a pergola over the seating, which will create some shade on the hotter days. I can see you have lots of planting, so no help needed there!

Hope these ideas may be useful.

Path by house looks narrow compared to 'juttingout' patio. Perhaps widen/level this and reduce length of patio,perhaps reusing slabs if in good condition (pressure clean?).

Give fence panels a uniform modern colour of preservative which would give an instant freshen up (slate,palegrey,willow perhaps).

Put pots into small groups,rather than in line, perhaps some side of your proposed bench.

Remove tall grass(?) or move to border.

Plant one or more small tree to link in with trees outside,towards back. RHS have lists of suitable small types.

When you are pot buying, some more of the blue glaze pots would look good interspersed amongst the terracotta. Group the pots in groups of either 3 or 5 in varying heights, either side of your new bench seating, maybe some (planted with color) could be brought out to the end of the patio. A good pressure wash of your current patio and a trim around the brickwork will bring the patio back to life. Maybe invest in some annual bulbs that will sprung up with spring color year on year, potted or inground around your fenceline.

Okay, sorry for the very rough visual, but I think your patio is rather large and oddly shaped with the semi-circle at the top. So... I would remove that semi-circle and some of the patio. Think that something to draw the eye through the garden towards the end might be nice. I've put an arch with a bench under it, path flanked by plants towards it. And plants between the path along the house and the grass. It's a simple transformation, I think, but will make the garden more interesting and soften the look towards the house. Ignore the planting I've used, it just was the easiest to copy and paste. Although lavender will be lovely. And of course your herbs.

I would stain the fence in a very dark colour.

A bench at the back will also give you a reason to walk through the garden. Or it might be a bird bath, or something else ornamental.

Garden is good size, but lacks character. I can see you already use paved area for seating, so I would suggest using the shape of the semi circle and make some semi circular wooden or stone bench seating around round stone firepit in the middle. And then work around it

Hi there,

You have a nice sunny space there and some good ideas have already been given here to you (I particularly agree with the use of a retractable wash line, pergola - a bit of shade and also adds height and interest to your garden, and something to draw your eye to the bottom of the garden like a bench - that would also give you an additional seating spot that is more shady than your patio).

I would also add that perhaps you should bring some of the planting more to the centre of the garden, instead of having it all to the borders. When you do this, you create a bit of division, mistery and interest as you won't be able to see the whole garden at once.

I also think that having big trough planters by the house instead of pots lined up would make it look less bitty. You could use the troughs for your herbs (easier to maintain them like this than in shelves in a wall that receives direct sun - 2 factors that increase a lot the amount of watering that you will have to do during summer). I would cover the walls by growing some climbers in trellises.
