Laying kitchen flooring

We have ordered vinyl click flooring for our new kitchen and my partner will lay it himself as he's done it many times before.
We know that flooring should go under the new kitchen units but concerned about damaging it as the rest of the kitchen etc is fitted. Any useful tips on protecting the floor while the kitchen installation is going on (partner and his dad are installing it so I know they will be careful). Thanks

We were originally going to have ‘click’ but changed our minds. When we have our fitted in a couple of weeks time we will be taking off the end panels and plinths to enable the flooring to go underneath the edge of them.

Hi Angelique,

There is nothing to say that you cannot wait until the kitchen is fitted before laying the floor - we find some of our customers want a floor "wall to wall" while others are happy to save a little budget by only going under the plinth line, with the floor being the last element to fit other than the plinth and end panels.

If it is a click lock system and particularly if the area is quite big, you should also note that the product is designed to "float" over the sub floor, and that therefore it may be necessary to cut out holes where either legs or the feet, say, of a big fridge freezer are going. This allows the floor to expand & contract with temperature and avoids the risk of either planks pulling out from each other or "bunching up" and clacking.

Make sure your subfloor has been well prepared and is smooth, level and debris free.

And if you do lay the floor first, the easiest & quickest way to protect is to buy a roll of coroplast (or equivalent corrugated plastic) floor protector and lay it/tape it before the next trades are traipsing through!

I'd try them in a herringbone pattern. I think the tiles are of the right size to work and it should make the room feel wider and add interest. These are obviously shown in a narrow room to help visualise. I'd also choose the darkest grain colour in the tile to use for grout as I think it looks a lot more effective. Laying them on the diagonal should also make the room feel wider though or going from longest wall to longest wall. I'd open a pack and try them out to see what you prefer

Hi, I think this is a decision based upon how you like your house set up. I personally like a co-ordinated looks, in the sense that there's a basic layout in each room. If the rooms are small, id have yhe same floor through out but if they are larger may consider different flooring, personally speaking. Different flooring isnt bad but in too small spaces may just become overpowering or mix-match In our latest renovation, we kept the flooring the same in each rooms on the same floor but had a contrasting floor in the hallway which falls in the centre and so creates a nice divide. It does indeed look like a great project. Going with what @Louise Ang said, you’ll probably be better off keeping it one storey and reconfiguring. I’ve been playing around with your plans (for fun!) and have posted below a layout option that gives you two bedrooms, a nice sized entrance/hallway, utility room, large shower room and living / dining / kitchen space. I kept as close to the original plans as possible (keeping internal walls if I could) and squared off the rear of the bungalow, only encroaching 20cm or so into the garden beyond the original plans. If you do wish to go for a loft conversion further down the line, you could potentially put a staircase in the hallway. Apart from seeking professional advice (architect / building surveyor) why not also have a look at other similar properties for sale on the same road / area and see what they have done with the layout? It’ll give you an idea of what is structurally feasible and what developments the local council is permitting. Good Luck!

@Jules Mc On the hallway floor at the moment - some tatty 1990s pale blond plasticky laminate that the previous owner of the house left. It has to come up to do some electrics underneath and once up I do not think it will go back down (and anyway it's way past time for that laminate to be retired). Yes it would be an option to paint the boards, although once the laminate is up I would have a slightly treacherous 'lip' to trip over into the front room, where there is parquet. The other factor is that messy family members in muddy boots tromp through the hall. However, a runner on dark boards would look temporarily great. On the basis of this thread I am going to investigate both vinyl and runner.
