Need ideas for hall/stairs/landing

Hey there,

We live in a mid-90s detached house that has a dado rail through this area. We want to keep it but it definitely needs some TLC - I'm not sure the woodwork on the stairs has been painted in the last decade! You can see I have started on the doors etc in the hallway.

I think we have decided to go for mostly white woodwork, with a mid grey on the walls (same colour above and below - not as dark as the random patch on the left that hubby did) but are wondering about the bannisters/spindles.

We plan to fetch the dark varnish off the handrails/newel posts and are hoping to manage to get them to the same colour as the floor (oak effect LVT), but do we just paint the spindles etc white or is there something to be achieved with using a grey to match the walls? Could this open the space more? Do bannisters need to contrast the walls?

Thanks!
