Painting paving slabs...?

Hi all,

I have an area of garden that is paved with red slabs; I am wondering if it is possible to paint them (an ivory/cream colour) using a Sandtex Masonry paint?

I’ve never attempted it myself and I’m not sure how hardwearing it is, but this company sell concrete paving paint. Do your research though as many floor paints are not that great.

I am not overly worried about the hardwearing aspect of things; I am more than happy to repaint every few months if needed, I just want to get rid of the hideous colour that they are at present!! Haha.

I would be loathe to express an opinion without knowing the specific products or seeing their technical data. If I were you, I'd contact the manufacturers for each, get some technical data and talk through your specific project with them and make sure they confirm whether their products are suitable (or not). I'd also want to make sure your roof is ok to take all the weight loads. As an off the wall suggestion, have you considered artificial turf? In a past life, I had a really dull concrete balcony in a 3rd floor flat in Germany, bought 12 m2 of decent quality artificial grass, some self-watering large planters and had my own garden/sunbathing spot/vegetable plot and absolutely loved it! In the grand scheme of things the difference in the acquisition cost is probably not so bad as more of the cost of laying the patio will be labour. You should check that the installation costs don’t vary too much. There is lots of conflicting advice about sealing stone so you may decide not to do it and save the maintenance - those against sealers point to Roman ruins and say that 2000 years later the stone still looks pretty good without sealer! If the objective is to have a seamless finish between the inside and out then you should go for the porcelain- stone changes colour in the wet and oven the first few years iron will rise to the surface of the stone giving it a brown quality that will be more noticeable when wet.

Thank you so much guys for your responses, I was really upset yesterday! But then I went out to have another look at the slabs (and managed to move two out of the way to see the third one) and that one was less grey and more... rust coloured? So I think it is a case of the top two were extra grey. In the online pictures the colour seems vastly buff with sections of grey, but the top two slabs were all grey :/ I'm sure I can return them (would need to find the receipt) but what stops me is the builder is coming on Monday (and I just want this patio already - you know how fickle the sunshine is here haha and I feel like I've wasted so much sun already :D ) but also because the york gold colour (that I think I want) I'd also be buying sight unseen so...... ugh! Lol However, I'm coming around to this colour :) and you're both right, a nice grey can be really nice! I need to stop second guessing all the decisions I spent months making, and triple checking and just let it all progress now, I do belive it's those super last min nerves getting to me! I will breath :)

Try pressure washing them first to see it you like them cleaned up. If you do want to change the look you can acid etch them or stain them- there are lots of how to videos online but basically you need to clean the slabs with a degreaser, apply your stain with a roller (or acid with a spray and 8-24 hours later a neutralizer), and then seal the finished product. There are options at the DIY store or online- personally I would be looking to buy a combined stain and sealer designed for concrete slabs.

I know you can get concrete dye but don't think it would work going that colour way. You could do it with masonry paint and once it's dry, seal it with a concrete sealer on the top which should help keep it more durable.

We stained our top concrete patio (used to be a shed base!) in a charcoal dye with sealer mixed in. Lasts maybe a year or so depending on traffic.

You could also get a motif pattern and mix it up ie do cream base with a darker pattern on it so when it fades it will look more vintage. Then seal it. Almost like a rug effect?

Thank you Tani H-S; all positive that it can be done! It's not an area of the garden that is used a great deal to be honest, but you can see it from the house so I want it to just look a bit nicer rather than such a monstrosity!

Definitely like the idea of some sort of motif too... will see how brave I feel!

We painted our patio 40 years ago and it looked great. Go for it.
