What would go in your perfect utility room?
Comments (6)A clothes drying rail on the ceiling (pulley maid), a drying rack that pulls out from the wall above a radiator, an ironing board (ideally that pulls out from a cupboard) and a railed area above a worktop for hanging ironed shirts. I would also stack the washing machine & dryer if you have both of those. Also behind closed doors. A few cupboards/pantry for kitchen items that are not used all the time, or key items you don't want to run out of. I keep a small stock of things like coffee, baked beans, tinned tuna, mayo etc in a base unit in my utility, alongside our spirits. Storage space for things like medicine, hot water bottles, lunch boxes, tissues, hoover etc. A functional, seamless space that is about the size of a small-medium kitchen. Not fussed about a door to the outside personally, although I know that is very normal....See MoreLaundry/utility
Comments (4)Could you have glazed doors to let a bit more light in or maybe some under cupboard lights. Ours utility is approx 2m x 2m, it's enough for a washer, dryer, fridge, sink, cupboards, loads of hanging space for coats, shoe storage and cat beds, the cats are fed in there too so it's out of the way. We haven't got any specific ventilation and building control didn't ask for any. Put plenty of plug sockets in too, we have double sockets in each corner....See MoreIs a utility area a must for you?

Comments (0)We are refurbishing a utility room in an early Victorian terrace. There is currently a fireplace which has an old cast iron oven built in (which is cracked and collects dust). The question is do we keep this and try to clean it up or are there any alternative ideas as to what we can do that utilises the space in a better way rather than a just an ornamental feature? The rest of the room is to have plain shaker style traditional cupboards that incorporate the washer / tumble dryer, sink and tall cupboard that will hide the ironing board / brooms and cleaning materials. Ideas had included removing the oven and making the area into a drying / airing space...See MoreRicky Watkins
