Entrance Hall Design Dilemma - help please!

Calling all experts!

We are gradually doing up a 1930’s house that was very dark, gloomy and dated when we moved in. We now seem to have the opposite problem though, in that our hallway seems too light and cold! So we’re after some help from the experts to see if there are a few quick wins we can put into action!

The hall table was a quick fix and hasn’t been given any attention on the décor front, it’s just functional at the moment! We would like to replace it with something more bold (have thought of a chair & table, bench, floor lamp etc), or even painting the current table a darker colour maybe. Difficult to know what is best with the stairs designed as it is - glad of ideas on this.

We put in the dark wallpaper below the dado rail to try and add in some body to the hall stairs and landing, without overpowering it. But with the white stairs cupboards, light tiles, white front door, and big windows, it just all seems too stark at the moment. Particularly as the house has tall ceilings. All my searches on Houzz seem to show me darker floors and I'm wondering if we've made a mistake with such light floors!? We have got 2 radiator covers on order currently, but these are white still. Realise the walls are all quite bare but it's a question of where to start and we don't want to clutter the place up! Should we paint the area round the front door a different colour or something?

It looks lovely. I painted the door for you just to show you what it looked like but none of my green/blue greys came out right so I went for pink!

Personally I’d swap the door mat for jute which really warms it up. I’d also have a woven/rattan basket/s on the console shelf.

can you move the console right a little and add a drum stool? I’d personally opt for linen but velvet would work too. The first one is by The Dormy House, the 2nd Tine K Home.

I’d add art over the radiator, paint the console as you suggested and depending on budget swap the lamp shade for a patterned one (picking up stained glass colours). Pooky are a good place to look

I agree with Minnie it's already looking lovely. I think a bit of texture would warm it up a bit. So I was going to suggest painting the door too and/or adding a door curtain - maybe a nice heavy velvet? Bottle green? You have a nice space to right hand side to pull the curtain over too.

Also maybe a rug in front of the console table. I have a bit of an obsession with Persian style rugs as they can introduce lots of lovely warm, burnished type colours but that's just my preference. Something else on the floor would break up the coolness of the tiles - although you might have to experiment with some rug grips. Also some more art above radiator etc. It's already a very lovely hallway and so nice to have such a large space.

Very much like my hall (almost identical except ours is 1922 and thus the detail is a tad more Edwardian in influence) ! I've added a wall light on the wall going up the stairs and matching pendants from Fritz Fryer and added a plain paper from Zoffany (called 'silk plain') . Thus the basic scheme is very plain and layered up with artefacts (tables, hall chair, paintings). I've added mirrors to throw light around the place..and am hunting for a distressed antique one to go right at the top of the stairs facing you. It looks as though your stairs go to left and right too... so adding the mirror will I think create more light and ambiance in that rather dark junction. I do agree that it would be lovely to have the stained glass replaced in the door. I added full door curtains with a upholstered pelmet over the door which makes it look much less stark (personally I don't think the little shelf at right adds anything and I'd remove it ;( ). . I chose an embroidered linen from Sanderson for the curtains and used the same fabric for the landing window and hooked that back with a French swan neck holdback and they were hung from a brass reeded Jim Lawrence curtain pole which goes very well with the Fritz Fryer lighting fitments. It's still work in progress as our beautiful carpet had to be removed due to allergy and we're still trying to get the best result on the oak floor in the hall. Hi Dalida! Yes, your flat needs a renovation, specially in the bathroom and kitchen. The wooden floor looks nice. Before starting the redising, it will be necessary you make a 'wishlist'. I would recommend a bigger kitchen . Have you considered having only 1 bigger bathroom? How many peple wil be living in the flat? How many bedrooms do you need? Is the kitchen entrance as nice as the main one ? Would you consider turning the kitchen entrance onto de main entrance to the flat? Then you'd be able to enter to the kitchen space ( it can be an attractive open-plan design - look at this one we fitted in a small apartment) Imagine that where the mirror is, is where your window is. If you turn this entrance onto the 'main one', you'll be able to have a big bedroom on the other side of the flat ( where the main entrance). You can keep the entrance and use it, but not for guest ( not nice to have visitors entering through your bedroom). As you can see there're a lot of options to discuss. I would recommend you to contact a profesional that helps you with the process, because if you meet him/her you can design together a really nice flat. Which style do you prefer? Would it be posible to change the position of the gas boiler? How much storage space do you need? For the new bathroom I would recomend to have storage space, and a large mirror will help to make the space feel bigger. As you can see, there're a lot of questions and lots of decissitions to take. Don't hesitate contacting a profesional to help you in the process it will sabe you money and headaches! We're based in South of Spain, so we're not close to help you with the renovation, but I hope my comments help you! I like the centre table idea, like ED's inspiration pic. I'd go for a pedestal base. Haven't you got the impressive feature fireplace. Would you consider matching a tabletop to that to tie in with the other room. Don't know if it would be too costly but worth costing it if you like the idea? Your floral display would look great centred on it in the hallway. I'd also go for a radiator cover rather than chair which, in my house, would become a dumping ground!

What I thought looked interesting (apart from the glazed entrance) was the apparent double height of your hallway which I can’t really see in your later photos. I think it would be nice to embrace that somehow. But yes, it’s looking a little bit bland. One idea could be a more exciting stair runner. Hi, I'm loving all the suggestions above. I have another one for you; you could go all Art Deco. I've picked the blue from the stained glass window as an accent colour for the lamp shade (Pooky) and art (all Canora Grey at Wayfair), a black and white graphic pattern chair (Wayfair). The dark grey wallpaper isn't doing it for me (sorry), so I've 'painted' that in the wall colour.

I agree with the others that it's really nice already.

Carolina's ideas are fab, I would definitely look at getting a funky rug, maybe one that picks up on the colours of the stained glass.
