Bifold door size

Hi everyone, we have an opening (where two windows currently sit) of 3910mm available.
Would you go for 5 panel bifolds? at 762mm per door or would you brick it up to 3600mm and have 3 panel bifolds at 1200mm per door?

I case you havent sorted it yet.

Obviously the larger is more expensive and you'll need more structure, but if cost is not an issue than I'd def. go for the larger one. We can make a 3D visual for this if you'd like to see it simulated. Feel free to get in touch.

2 pane slider. less panes the better. If it has to be a bifold then the 3 pane. I definitely wouldn't want a pane measuring 76cm, I have wider windows!

After going through the same dilemma, we are so happy we went with bifolds. They open out the whole space whereas sliding doors still leave you with some glass (a doors width). Well worth the extra money. Of course if you only have a small opening then perhaps double opening french doors would be better than sliding doors.

At home we have one of each. Sliding from the dining room into the garden room and then bifold in the garden room. I like both but it’s nice having the bifold that can be stacked providing an uninterrupted view. We’ve left our bifolds open all through this hot weather. On the downside a blackbird flew into the open bifolds. Needless to say he came to an unfortunate ending.

It depends how you want to use that 'family area' We are having 750mm at each end of our sliding doors to ensure enough room at each side for units. Also want to add, if you were going for a 2.7 m opening, is it 2 pane? I think 3 pane on such small openings really take out the wow-factor. In fact I think 2.7m would be best with a 2 pane slider.

My parents had fly screens installed a good few years ago by a local guy who specialised in blinds. I don't think the guy is trading anymore so I guess this is just to say it is definitely possible, don't give up! I am not sure why more homes in the UK don't have them to be honest - we had terrible problems over the summer in London. Also I recommend an electric fly swat for the naughty ones which get past your screens.

Hi Emma, clearly, the more bifold doors you have the more sightlines/frames you will get obstructing the view when the doors are shut (which will be most of the time considering UK weather and temperatures) so Ellie's advice about the sliding doors is well worth considering. Sightlines in sliding doors can be 20mm or less these days. The frames on bifolds are at least 50mm (x2 of course) and gaskets take up a few mm as well, so with five door panels you will have more than 500mm of frames within your 3910m opening (at least 12%) You will also need to consider the height of the bifold doors if you go for the 3-leaf 1200mm option because the weight of the glass starts to hit the limits in taller doors, putting excess strain on the hinges and runners.

I presume you want three or five doors so you can have a traffic door, but if you can live without a traffic door, a four door system would suit perfectly well - but you would still have about 10% of the view obstructed by frames. Hope this helps?
