Design Dilemma Dining Rooms Living Rooms

Hi I am looking to partition Living room and open plan kitchen diner. I have recently opened up kitchen and dining are. I want to have some sort of partition between the living room and the open plan. Currently there is about 2.4m opening between the two. I am looking at various options ---sliding doors, bi-fold, pocket doors. I have limited budget so which of these would be better option , space and budget wise. Any advice would be helpful . thanks

Are you wanting to close off the living room? Depending on the style of your home and the room, simple french doors opening in or out. Bifolds could work.

I do love the Crittal style internal doors, but I think they are pricey. Pocket doors sound great, but not sure how hardy they are. Another simple option is to put up a plasterboard wall with a door, creating a more closed off feeling.

Hi C S,

Sliding barn door can be inexpensive if you have enough wall either side of the opening - how wide is the actual room?

I love open plan living, and it definitely is the way most families want to live at the moment. If you're not sure about totally open plan living then there are ways that you can zone the space to create more separate areas eg open shelving used as a room divider, sliding / concertina doors which slide in to the wall or fold flat against the walls. If budget is no object then you can get glass panels which are clear and change to opaque at the flick of a switch (they are very expensive though!). If budget is tighter then use wall coverings (paint, wallpaper etc) and different flooring options to delineate the individual spaces. Have a look at an open plan kitchen I did a couple of years ago for some ideas: - there are lots of before and after pictures in this folder. To be fair, it wasn't the family's main living room but you get the general idea. Thank you for your response. We had plans pretty finalised until we found out that we can keep just that long wall into the large space as it is a load-bearing. There is an opportunity to put a door in though. I am attaching what it looked like with all the walls that we can now remove. We have also been tinkering with ideas which I am adding as well. I added some comments on the plans as well. What we want to have is a dining area with a large table that seats 8-10 people. We want enough space for two people to work and cook in the kitchen. Thus, we were thinking of an island or an L-shape workspace coming out. We'd like to have a utility room to have space for all the cleaning utensils. Washer and Dryer will be upstairs in a separate laundry room. The living room is nothing formal but an area to relax and watch TV. We'd like to have an L-shaped cough in there for a family of four (2 kids under the age of 10).

Definitely straight. It would be good to put some coving in the kitchen to tie in with the front room. In my experience it needs to look in keeping rather than being an exact match. Reproduction coving is inexpensive to source but is more expensive than basic ogee coving

Glass partition between hall and living room - must be fireproof

We'll have a "broken plan" layout between the kitchen and living room, so I think the reason for the partition to the hall needing to be fireproof is because of the kitchen. If you imagine a rectangle divided into quarters, the hall is in the bottom left. and it has a normal fire door to the kitchen in the top left. But the kitchen is semi-open to a dining area in the top right, and that's semi-open to the living room in the bottom right. I think in order to stop any chance of fire spreading from the kitchen to the hall we need to have a fireproof boundary between the living room and hall. Thanks for letting me know how much your wood partition cost. That's certainly an option. I take it that the wood is fireproof?

You can get inexpensive doors but put them on Parliament hinges so that the open fully and fold flat against the wall (assuming there is space)
