would like to know what evergreen and perennials I should put in my large raised borders

Yes - it would be helpful to know where you live (approx), soil type if you know, aspect and exposure and hours of direct sun.

Hi there, a lovely climber that needs little or no attention is an evergreen honeysuckle called 'Fire cracker' which grows in sun or shade. One tip for more flowers is train the plants horizontally not vertically. White jasmine is another evergreen climber that smells wonderful and again needs only to be tied to the wall. It has white flowers that give off a heady scent at night from June to September and in winter the leaves turn a glorious red colour. Cotoneaster is also a great evergreen shrub that looks great all year round and the bees love it. Mine is now climbing a wall but started off as a standard shrub. White flowers in the summer and red berries in autumn. Good luck xx

hi - I am no expert and my spelling/memory of these plant names will be awful - , but have faced similar challenges with wet clay. In the shadiest border I have Iris, ferns, honeysuckle, astrantia, philadelphus/mock orange. Sunnier spots have fatsia japonica, deutzia strawberry fields. climbing roses, I recommend an RHS A to Z of plants, something like Right Plant Right Place as it avoids you spending money on plants that just won;t thrive in the soil conditions. For a bit of summer colour day lilys are ok in clay but may not be suitable if you have cats.Another one for good early summer colour is bleeding heart, its very pretty. Lavender and sage I am pretty sure won;t like the conditions in your photo. I have a fairly neat tall evergreen which is called crinodendron hookerianum/chile lantern tree. I've also got a silk tassel bush "James Roof"and hydrangea petiolaris, but these may be too big for your space. Christmas box/ sarcococca confusa is a nice fairly compact evergreen. As I say I am no expert, just letting you know what has managed to survive in similar conditions in my home garden. For herbs like lavender and sage I agree with Jen P's recommendation for a raised bed. Good luck with the planting!

Advice on building block-work raised planters

Hi, looking for advice on building block and brick walls for a raised planter. The height is seat back height, so around 840mm, and will be a 6 metre long wedge shape box, with the narrowest point at 500mm and the widest 1400mm. I'll build an internal wall somewhere along the wider end to provide additional support. This will connect with a lower wall of around 450mm heigh. The planter will contain small plants but considering a eucalyptus or olive tree. So the advice I need is: As this is a box, not a free standing wall, am I ok with a foundation of 300/300mm? Some parts of the trench I've dug to 300mm deep are into clay, others not. Will I be ok with single skin walls? I'm planning on building with standard aerated blocks with a double layer of engineered bricks for DPC. Will the roots of a eucalyptus or olive tree tree need a stronger wall? To provide a moisture barrier inside I was going to line with plastic but is there a finishing render that can be applied inside and out to provide this? May be a coloured one (white) that also doesn't requiring painting as a final finish to the shown surface? I'm presuming normal cement is suitable to use for the footings and mortar? I've attached a rough 3d visual, though the wedge to the right is going to be only 450mm heigh. Thanks

I assume that area gets a lot of sun? I can suggest plants but I have no idea if they are bunny food or not I’m afraid. Can I ask why eucalyptus? They are very large trees that will swamp the area. Good evergreen shrubs are Viburnum tinus (white flowers in spring), Ceanothus (blue flowers in late spring, Star Jasmine (fragrant flowers in summer, will need something to climb up), Photinia (Red-green leaves and cream flowers in spring), Choysia ternata Sundance (yellow leaves and white flowers now) and Cistus (pink or white flowers now). Hebes are evergreen too and small shrubs for the front of the border with purple or white flowers. Deciduous shrubs that love sunshine are Hibiscus (large pink or mauve flowers in summer), Viburnum opulus (white flowers in spring), lavender, Cotinus (purple leaves) Sambucus (Elderflower purple leaves and white flowers) and Shrub Roses. Smaller flowers for the front of the border are hardy Geraniums (loads of colours), Campanula (blue or white flowers) and Erigeron (pink flowers), but there are loads. i hope I haven't listed too many!
