Kitchen - where to put light switch

We decided to put big sliding doors in the kitchen, leaving us with no walls to put the light switches for the kitchen and backyard lights. Any ideas?

I'd put the kitchen in B, living in A and the dining area in C. That way you'll have a view on the garden from the kitchen and the living area. And the kitchen is near the utility, back door and door into the hall, handy when you come home with the shopping. It's also not in direct view from the door into the area. Unless you, like we do, use the dining area not only for dinner, but also for coffee with friends, reading the newspaper... then I'd put the dining table near the garden. In fact, I'd put a TV outlet in both spaces so you can switch dining and living around if you feel like a change.

It depends rather on what the wall is constructed of and how far you want to move the switch. It is probably easier (and less dusty) if it is a wooden stud wall than if it is built from brick. If you only want to move it an inch or so then you will just need to extend the hole, move the switch and then fill the space left behind. But if you want to move it further than that then strictly speaking you will need to move the cable as well since the regs say that the cable is supposed to run vertically or horizontally from the switch. Since you will be covering up the old position the easiest solution would be to put the new switch horizontally positioned from the old one. Run a cable from the old switch to the new and fit a blanking plate over the old switch. Less filling and it satisfies the regs with regard to cable position.

You could consider LED strip lighting mounted on the back of dressing table (if freestanding) or back of the shelf if going for something built in. You can buy plug in ones from IKEA which you join together to make longer lengths. Fairly inexpensive so wouldn't be a massive commitment. I have just sellotaped the ones I use for lighting inside a dresser to the back of the shelves. They plug in at the wall and also have a separate on/off switch on the cable.

Thanks @Jonathan much appreciated- so kind of you to help! I’ve made an offer so if it’s accepted I’ll take someone in to measure up and work out what’s best. I think your suggestion has lots of advantages! Depends on fire/building regs out of interest what’s your job? I assume you work in property? Also what program did you use to draw the floor plan? It’s super helpful! Can you do scaled floorplans with it? Eg. Showing the actual size of the bed to the room? Thanks again for your help!

Light switch onn entrance to the kitchen for the actual kitchen lights and at one side of your doors for the lights outside your doors?

The switch can go anyway for bluetooth (even in a cupboard) as long as there’s power to the light. They then need pairing. You can have an App on your phone.
