Under stairs dilemma

Hi, We're trying to figure out what to do with space under the stairs when we turn our lounge into a kitchen diner.

We'll have bench seating for a dining table along the wall the stairs are on, but then the head height drops to approx 95cm and we're not sure what to do with the space (note the CGIs miss out a supporting joist). Initially we'll probably use this as a play space for young kids and it would be great to use it as a den, but then as the kids grow older or we sell the house we still want the space to be functional.

Below are some ideas we've had - any thoughts on which approach you think would be best or any new ideas would be great.

One option (3) would require the stairs to be rebuilt to raise the half landing - functionally this would really help, but would obviously be expensive!

Congrats on the new kitchen! It looks great (as much as I can see of it) and I love the wood (oak?) you've chosen and those gorgeous doors. That's a good space for a pantry, as skr01606 suggested. You can go two ways, either for some classic shelves or for pull-out drawers (both would need to be custom made, unless you go for that system of boards on adjustable brackets (like in 2nd pic). Now, if you choose shelves, you could first leave enough space for the dyson and build shelves around it. To use both sides, one could have 'normal' (about 20cm) wide shelves, the other side narrow, spice rack type. If it was my space though, assuming you have enough storage in the kitchen (that was supposed to be a loo, right?) I'd have a 'wine cellar' in there. Sort of like the last photo, but smaller :)) Hope this helps, good luck! PS: You can image google 'under stairs pantry' for more ideas.

I always think that a hall with a seating area is just bliss for sitting down while pulling on your boots or flicking through a magazine or two! I would shelve the entire area that is before the post and have a built in seat with more storage above and below it to make life even more clutter free. Good luck hope it works out for you.

Don't be in a hurry to fill the area with anything as oneday you may find a 'must have' large decorative item and this will be the area to put it. I notice there's a big mirror over the delicate console with small ornaments, so something else as big close by will balance this.

Hi Marie! I think you have such a lovely space underneath the stairs, that it would be a shame to just put a console table there. The costings to get a carpenter to build a simple but effective display unit (see below) will probably be around £200-250. I think it would be great to use that space below to add something a bit more exciting, and you can add lovely bits of decor to make it even more wow! i.e vases, statues,plants etc...

There are some great ideas out there for fitted under stair cupboards, including pull out drawers with built in shelves.

Sorry, the pics all really just looked the same to me - it just is a space that you will chuck things into and folk would see the clutter. I definitely wouldn't put any seating under it as heads will get bumped.

If it was me, I'd get it boxed in and then it would be useful storage space without it just looking a mess.
