Renovating Fireplaces Living Rooms

Fireplace where there isn’t one?!

Hi everyone. This is my first time posting here! I’m after some advice please on a home we are purchasing. It’s a 1970s renovation project and there is no fireplace or chimney. We really like having a focal point that a fireplace creates... Is it possible to install a gas fire or log burner without either?! I really hope this isn’t a stupid question!! 🤦‍♀️

if you have space you can create a wall or look at media walls on net too

My friend removed her dated gas fire and replaced it with a media wall. It looks fab. Hers was from Ikea, a bit like this. Sadly log burners are very polluting both inside the home and outside.

There is a little show at the Cherry Tree village (just south of Southgate) that has a lot of this type of fireplace for sale. My daughter bought one which was initially rusty and the shop made it beautiful. They also offered her a good choice of tile to go in the sides.

If you do put your TV on a long low console where the fireplace now is, you will most probably have space for a chair in the corner where the TV now is. You could put the floor lamp that is now next to the smaller sofa with that chair, or at least in that corner. Then put lamp that doesn't take up that much space in the corner with the smaller sofa. I hope you'll have enough space left for a coffee table of some sort. Do you know the dimensions of your room? I would have loved to put the coffee table in the right direction, but can only do so much photoshop magic ;-)

Hi, yes they're actual flames with all the natural movement and variation you'd expect (and the volume of flames/heat output is controllable with it being gas). When the stove is set up, there are ceramic 'logs' and embers positioned (that do look very realistic) and also some stuff that looks like wire that they call Emberglow. This wiry stuff is near invisible and spread/clumped at the bottom and this causes the flames to vary and lick and dance upwards. We were worried a fake wood burner would look naff and were disappointed when we knew we couldn't have the real thing, but went to see this in action in a showroom and were impressed! It helps that the model we have also comes as a real wood burner and the cast body is identical for both.

Both of the fires you have posted links for will be no good unless you are prepared to build an internal or external chimney breast. if you go into a fireplace showroom you will see that contemporary flame effect gas fires sit behind the mantlepiece so you will been about 45 cm behind the wall. Moving the gas to the lounge depends on where it is in the house and how your gas engineer can do it.... for instance if you have a floor with a space under in it is a lot easier than if you have concrete floors (as in lots of brand new houses). Instead of these gas fire ideas consider an electric flame effect fire. These are much slimmer.

Flueless fires can be installed in lots of places. No need for a chimney. Log burners are a tad more tricky unless it’s a faux one.

I made an MDF chimney in an old house that lacked a focal point - had an electric faux flame fire ( as my daughter was small and I felt that would be safer ) it created a bit of atmosphere and I added shelves to the ‘alcoves’ that it created .

You could have a bioethanol stove that looks like a log burner? It won’t put out the intensity of heat that a wood burner does, but provide a gentle warmth, and a focal point with a real flame, without the need (or installation costs) of a flue.

Assuming it is an external wall it’s not that difficult to have a multi fuel stove. Flue just goes outside and up the side of house.

Look at modern electric fires like Stovek. Amazing focal point plus a real heat boost when needed.

I agree with finding an electric fire. Firstly well insulated houses get too hot with a gas fire or wood burner so an electric fire is a great option as you can have the flames without the heat.

Also in what world does anyone think blocking up that window and adding that hideous flue is a good idea for the front of your house???
