Help needed on living room: rug, fireplace, cushions
Comments (12)First of all, you aren't clueless :) I would follow your gut and turn the couch to face the fireplace, put the TV on the oak box near the window, the armchair and side table over near the built in dresser, and the red cabinet between the two windows where the armchair was. I like both your pieces of art on the other side of the room. If the red cabinet is between the two windows, you might want to switch the vertical piece with the one that is on the wall above the dining table - just see how it looks. Actually, I think the bird painting could look really good above the fireplace - it will add visual height (as jonathan suggested) and brings some red to that side of the room and it has bits of black and charcoal to tie in the fireplace and the couch...... If you have the TV to the left of the fireplace, I'd move the map (I like it for personal reasons :). Anyway, you really want a mirror up there.... it's a bit tricky because the fireplace is off set. Something this shape would be fab because most other items in there are really angular, but this one is too big and the price is crazy: Otherwise maybe a couple of small mirrors that you can also off set and put in a group, which would also add height: I'd do three or five of different sizes and shapes. I actually like the rug size and colour - it ties in with the blinds and the taupe in two pieces of your art and has good texture. Add a few more cushions to the couch and armchair in a couple of different fabrics. Maybe some of these:...See MoreLiving room accessories: wall art, rug and cushions
Comments (11)Hello Claudia, Speaking from an art on walls point of view, I'm loving the challenge, so I present a few choice pieces for the wall above your two armchairs that I think will be a happy compliment to your existing decor and furnishings: As regards the picture above your piano, the colours work well with your room but you don't like the subject, right? If that's the case, this consideration will have to be a decision based on what subject(s) you really like or are quite sentimental to, as opposed to colour matching an art piece just to fit in with the rest of the room. If you do play the piano, musicians are very sentimental people, so you want something above the piano that you can "feel and connect to" when you're sitting there playing. It has to be sentimental to you, irrespective of what it is and what colour it may be, and not to consider it as part of the rooms overall decor. If there is anything I can be of further help with, feel free to contact me through my Houzz profile or website: http://thejonescollection.gallery All the best with whatever you decide to choose for your wall spaces....See Moreliving room finishing touches
Comments (6)Hi - I would suggest you add a rug in the centre something to draw the eye into the centre of the room and add a somewhat focal point. The other thing you can do is to add a large picture on top of the fireplace to again draw the focal point to the centre. On the floor lamp - I agree to replace within something in keeping with your current style and sticking to the wood texture. I would also add some plants even if they are faux, it will add a bit more life and style to the room. I've picked up the accent colour from your cushions and used that to pick a similar coloured rug just to give you an idea: https://www.habitat.co.uk/grid-medium-grey-and-yellow-geometric-wool-rug-140-x-200cm-220229 comes in different colours as well https://www.habitat.co.uk/tripod-ash-wooden-tripod-floor-lamp-with-white-shade-252742...See MoreLiving Room - Finishing Touches
Comments (35)Catching up on this thread! Thanks for all the replies. Always really good advice. @petersmummy thanks! Yeah I'm maybe overthinking what to put on the table haha. Feels like the consensus is to put a rug under the table. @Resh Thanks! Different opinions are always welcome :) I think you are probably right. It is wood overload. I've went back and forth a few times on painting the windows and panels. I think I ultimately will paint it white to brighten the room, freshen the finish and match the skirting and door. It's just difficult to bring myself to paint over it. Complementing with a different colour could be tricky I think. I'm not so keen on painting the floor or the table. The floor is the same in all the other rooms so I think that keeps things cohesive. The top of the table needs refinished so I could choose a different wood stain. Your home looks amazing!! It's great! I do actually like colour I'm just not sure how to use it haha. @minnie101 wow that was a while ago! But I got some great advice from you and others that I eventually got round to doing. Thanks for your help! :) I remember how it looked when I first went to view the place. I think its going in the right direction thanks to the help from you guys! (attached some photos) Thanks for the photoshop pictures! They are really helpful to see how it might look. Yeah I think there probably is room for a circular or oval rug. The ceiling light I will likely replace with one of the suggestions above - a brass mobile/sputnik style chandelier. Those wall lamps are pretty awesome! They look great. Would have to be fitted fairly high so people can still use the space behind the sofa to walk to the dining area. I don't have much in the way of art so far. I have a print of this on the left hand side of the fireplace. Even though it is a fair size it looks a little small on the wall to me next to the surround and large mirror. I'll check that site out thanks. Vases look awesome! I'll give that a go....See MoreJesmondDene
