Sloping garden, how should sleepers be laid to look good on the eye?

Hi Sally, I think you need to explain your question a bit more, in order to get some answers. What are you trying to achieve with the sleepers? What have you considered already, etc. In the pic it's not really possible to see the slope so it would help if you explain that too.

I'd always prefer them to be straight, using a spirit level. However your fence hasn't been put straight, do maybe you should just go with the slope of the ground?

Nice work so far, now for the fun stuff- the planting makes or breaks a project like this. A good garden designer will challenge your ideas and explore the alternatives with you to find the right solution so here goes! It's important to remember that you will be looking out at this view from the windows most of the time so THAT's the most important view. You say south facing, I guess the windows are south facing so anything against that brick wall should not filter out more light and block the view unless you want a more intimate feeling in that space. It's vital to consider the purpose of the planting along the brick wall. I'd ask you why you want trees there? The wall is attractive but do you need more screening from your neighbours? One way to add screening is to add a top trellis with cllmbers - you control EXACTLY the height and have no issues with the wall being damaged to the tree becoming too large. The requirements for planting can then be fulfilled by filling the border with structural shrubs and a good variety of shade tolerant perennials. Hi i am happy you like my little garden retreat, you are right it is nice to add your own touch to your garden and not to be to regimental, it gives you a great satisfaction when you sit back in your garden lounger and think i created that, it also works out a lot cheaper, just adding bits at a time, and if a plant is not working for you, you can dig it out and move it knowing that you have not paid someone a fortune to put them in, i am not saying professional help is not needed as i had to get someone in to do my flag stones but it was someone i knew so that worked out cheaper and my brother did the decking at both side of my garden, he is not a professional he just likes DIY don't tell him but i think he is pretty good at it lol.. it cost me the price of the wood and 2 cans of beer,( i was given a couple or quotes of £450 for a 10ft x 7ft deck and £399 for a 7ft x 6ft deck,) i did paint it big mistake on my part as with being south facing it just peeled off with the heat but is nearly all off now so i will just power wash it once a year and give it an oil treatment, when you get your garden done send us a pic i for one would love to see your project,

I think I’d advise against decking too, at least in the area close to the house as it would need to below the level of the damp course which would involve taking up the paving and a lot of ground works anyway. Decking needs to be raised so there’s no contact with ground but by doing so can create other problems such as make a great nesting site for rats and other rodents, not to mention slipperyness and more maintenance. Not saying it can’t be done and being a party pooper🙂, you could have steel frame and composite decking, just think it will be more work than you’re envisioning. With regards drainage and moss I’m guessing its north facing and doesn’t get much sun? Does water pool or puddle on the paving? Perhaps a drainage channel (see example pic) next to house may work more effectively but in a small area I don’t think it‘d be necessary. Certainly check the gutters for moss but i wouldn’t worry too much about the roof unless it’s really bad. On our house the birds tend to flick moss off the roof and gutters in search of food. You can get porcelain paving that looks like wood, maybe this could be an alternative. Personally I would get some advice from a few local landscapers to see what is possible and look at drainage.

This is where we are with it now, decided to go with something quite easy to design, and relatively easy to install as I have zero experience! new fencing installed to right side rendered left wall (contractor) small decked area at the back sleeper borders down both sides new porcelain paving (contractor) grass reseeded (had to strip back some turf in the photo before winter to make it lower than new paving - so reseeded that last week) So hopefully by the end of March it’ll look a bit better, we’re looking to get some flamingo gravel in the borders and only god knows what we will plant!?! Also looking to put some taller bits toward the decked area, so we can have the back as a little secluded area as suggested. We ended up avoiding the circles as wasn’t brave enough to incorporate in to the design as we have no idea what we are doing but quite like the idea of some large metal spheres amongst the plants in the borders. Top of fence line will hopefully be broken in future years with planting. Sleeper line will always be more visible as at front of planting, so horizontal level sleepers to calm the senses and get some shrubs or trees planted!

Where there is a slope, then fencing and walling should be staggered, so the top of each fence panel or sleeper is straight. The fence should never be sloping. Like below.

I have tge same style of fencing as you Sally, and my fence follows the slope. But my sleepers were laid straight. Looks better with level paving etc.
