Home Decorating Design Dilemma

I am in oak overload!!

I have just bought a house with a lot of oak. Oak effect Amtico floor, oak skirtings, oak staircase and oak window sills. This has been combined with oatmeal carpet and lots of beige walls. The overall effect feels like way too much oak. My dilemma is that I love the oak so do not want to paint over it but need some help with carpet and wall paint colours that will complement the oak but dial down the beige. I hope this makes sense. I have attached some photos. Please feel free to ask me any questions and thanks in advance for your help.

Are these images of your furniture or the previous owners? It doesn’t really feel oak overload but Personally I’d paint the skirting boards though, I know they’re easy maintenance but the walls will look taller if they’re in the wall colour. The carpets also look brand new, do you need to change them?

I don’t get the oak overload at all. The bedrooms are lovely and very soothing. The living room could do with a nice big rug to give a cosiness to the room, I rather like the oak window sills. Painting the skirting a similar shade to the walls, as Minnie suggestions, will make it more cohesive. Other than that it looks a lovely home.

Most oak floors tend to be engineered these days as all things considered it's the better way to go. Pricing for quality engineered oak and solid oak are pretty much the same. Aesthetically you get exactly the same look but without any of the potential pit falls of solid oak I.e seasonal shrinkage and increased install costs. Did you have a particular look / tone in mind? with some further detail I could organise you some samples of our hand finished floors.

We have the same type of panelling in our hall and it was oak the same as yours with an oak floor. It just started to feel quite dark and drab but we hesitated to to do anything for fear of messing it up. In the end we painted all the panelling in Farrows French grey, left the doors and floors wood and painted the sides of our staircase and the spindles in Farrows clunch but left the newel posts and the bannister rail as wood - looks like a different hallway - I have never regretted painting it

It's not easy to purchase 'off the high street' stuff that's for a period look. You need antique shops and online suppliers of one off chairs. Wing back and club chairs are of the Victorian era, so try searching online for that type of thing. Victorians were all about colour and rich textures. Blues, Greens, dark reds in crushed velvets. They also had a good old quantitiy of dark wood, mahogany, then some slightly lighter in Elm and Oak. Basically, richness was the key word. Start with a couple of wing back armchairs in a bold contrastng colour. Get a throw for the sofa to hide it's modern look if you can't replace. A rich rug, dark wood coffee table and side tables. Mixing and matching the woods is ok, as Eclectic is a good look for that Era also. Maybe you could just paint the bottom of the coffee table that you have as it's to country cottage for the right look at the moment.

Hi Sianie. As the kitchen is white you really have your pick of colours. How much light does the room get and which way does it face? Re sofas I would probably choose a neutral colour and you can then add colour with cushions and other accessories which can be updated when you fancy a change for less money. If the room isn't massive I would probably avoid using really dark colours for the sofas. If you're decorating the whole house which you seem to be I might spend some time looking at styles on houzz and interior magazines and adding to your ideabook so you can have fun doing it. You can choose complementary wall colours for each room and then add different accent colours which will help the house flow.

I like it & don’t feel the oak overload either. I’d keep the skirting as they are but go for some colour to break it up- rugs, art & maybe repaint the feature wall in the bedroom

you could apply a stain to the oak floor to give it a different look. is it a engineered floor, if so you may need to sand very lightly before. I think oak is fine overall but the wall colours need a bit more to define the spaces.

I wouldn’t class it as oak overload and I most definitely would’t be painting any of it. It adds some class to the finish as opposed to cheap deal/pine being painted white. To paint over it would be a catastrophy. You’d be spoiling an expensive timber finish.

I‘ve always found green tones work very well with oak so if you want to emulsion the walls look for a nice mid/paler shader of green.

Look at Cromarty by F&B. You could also look at Tranquil Dawn by Dulux. I have both complimented by Oak skirting.

I’m with the others, no oak overload for me either! The colour palette is subdued (and calm) so simply introduce coloured accents in cushions, objects, rugs, artwork, etc to take your eye away from oak (particularly the floor expanse). You have a beautiful home and a great canvas to work from. Use Houzz photos for inspiration so you know what you’re looking for before you buy anything.

I think with your own choices of furniture it will be nice. agree about paint the skirting boards in wall colour too.
