Best colour palate for a rental cottage
Comments (7)I dont know how light the cottage is but dark grey carpets could darken it quite significantly. Why not try a pale'ish dove grey or a greige? For the "wet" rooms, you could try a vinyl floor? Having the flooring in a similar colour throughout will make the space feel bigger so maybe a stone effect to go with the carpet or grey'ish timber? It's also cheap to update. White only works works in rooms with plenty of light. I'd look at the light in each room and go for pale neutrals in stone, chalky white, grey etc. you could always mix and match paint with a couple of feature ŵalls so it's still economical or maybe a neutral textured wallpaper in the lounge for example?...See MoreKitchen dilemma
Comments (8)They are gorgeous. I LOVE the Sebastian Cox kitchen and had already saved a photo of it. However, costs are an issue and while everyone tells me a 'local carpenter' can knock something similar up, this has not been my experience. The builder we are using also built our own kitchen around IKEA drawers and charged a lot to do this. Sounds easy to just add your own doors but then there are the ends, the bits in between etc. Compromise is inevitable as the barn is my financial future!...See MoreLooking for thoughts to give this terraced cottage some more kerb appe
Comments (25)It's all about the colour of the render and front door. I would go for a dark paint on the render with a complimentary front door colour. Keep the windows white but think "Town House" look. The house is small so I'd go to the expense of using Farrow and Ball paint (often discounted at Bank Holiday time at the superstore beginning with H). Then improve the appearance of the windows by having window boxes, painted same colour as the render, filled with ever green plants such as a mix of Box and Ivy. We are going for the Town Smart Look here, and nothing can be more sad than a flower filled window box that needs attention. If you want an outside lantern then buy one that fits close to the wall like a "coach lamp" go for the most expensive that you can afford ideally in a galvanised grey colour. It will add considerable style to the property....See MorePaint dilemma kitchen
Comments (10)Sorry, didn't realise you wanted to pain the units, thought you wanted to paint the walls. You'll need to get a colour that goes with the floor tiles, which I think are grey. Matching two greys together isn't easy. It's only really made possible by either taking a floor tile to the shop and picking out colour cards that you think will go with it, or just collecting the cards and taking them home. The rug on the floor won't be helping in the kitchen as it sucks the light. The dining area is lovely, albeit for me, there's just too many things in there. For instance, the objects on the table, two urns, a candelabra, two further candles and a votive glass? One object only is enough, the urn or the candelabra. Why also the need for a bench behind the table? It's nice to have things placed just so, but too many make a room look crowded. Your eye should be drawn to an object or two. I think a little de-clutter at both ends would help open up both rooms. Placing too many objects around and not keeping surfaces clear also sucks light from a room. Try clearing the kitchen out so that you get a proper sense of the space and then it may be easier to decide upon a colour. The worktop can't really be seen, but you need to take the colour of that in to the decision making also. . I'd also remove the blind as that doesn't help with light. I notice that you only have 3 spotlights in the kitchen. If that's not enough and it's still dark in the day when you've removed some of the stuff on the walls, then you could consider extra lighting with daylight bulbs. We have those as we're north facing and live in an old cottage with low ceilings....See MoreHU-169995131
