Is it worth getting skylights that open in a kitchen renovation?

A little advice please!

I am currently in the process of building a kitchen extension and cannot decide if electronic opening skylights are necessary or not for ventilation? The extension has 2 doors and a large window, I also live in Northumberland so the weather is very rarely hot!

We've been quoted £2,000 more for skylights that open so want to make sure we go with the right decision!

Anyone who has experience in this and can give some advice d hugely appreciate.

In all honesty, we have never opened ours - and we had our kitchen extended 14 years ago! Opening the doors is so much quicker and seems to have more effect on the ventilation....

£2000 upgrade for electronic opening skylights sounds expensive. Looking at the velux website it looks like the upgrade to electronic opening is £500 for a large window. (And of course you would need an electrician too)

So perhaps there are cost efficiencies to be made? Perhaps the plan was to have four opening windows but you might choose to have standard opening on just one or two.

But personally I think that opening skylights is really useful if it’s hot as hot air rises and so opening a velux can cool a space quicker than a door, if you burn something then you can ventilate your space faster, and the amount of fresh air coming in is more controllable than opening a door.

That being said you can open and close your velux with a hook on a pole so having electric opening is not essential

Good morning Emanuel. Thank you for the picture! It is easier to recommend something when we can see the actual staircase. For your steps and risers, I recommend using our stair cladding parts as you can install them over your existing steps and risers (they are extremely easy to install). You can go for a walnut or white oak timber/colour. The newel post, handrails and spindles don't look too bad so it is up to you if you want to change them or not. It would look better if you changed them. You can renovate them with a stop chamfered design, or you can even go with a glass design (which seems to be the preferred solution for staircase renovation in 2016). Because we have this competition going on, I would suggest that for now you place a small order (maybe buy the cladding products) and then, if you win, you'll be able to get the other stair parts for free. Here is one of the projects where we used our stair cladding parts with our glass panels.

Would it be possible to tuck the utility and downstairs loo further under the stairs? In more of an L shape? Would it be possible to fit the loo further under the stairs? Then place a stacked washer dryer next to the entry to it? To give a feeling of space a sight line from the front into the back yard would best be preserved so maintaining the door between the hall and kitchen is important. You could close up the door between the hall and the dining as you would have access via living and your newly opened kitchen.

There are so many kitchen providers out there that I think it’s worth shopping around a bit more. My kitchen is 12 years old and from Wrens. They supplied everything but I had my own fitter. It’s okay and has stood the test of time. Most of the Wren’s problems are to do with poor fitting. They have flashy showrooms which tempt people. I have heard DIY Kitchens are supposed to be really good and lots of Hoyzzers use them. Why not try some independent kitchen fitters who cater for all budgets. Worth a try.

We have two 1m x 4m window panels in the design and the cost was £2000 to make both electric. it does seem very expensive for something I cant imagine we will use often. thanks for the advice...

We have got french doors and velux in our kitchen extension and only ever open the skylight when we burn toast which is probably once a year.... :)

Hi Becky,

Given that you have two doors and large window (I assume openable window), and if you are looking to cut costs its probably not worth having the motorised skylights which you will use very rarely. Hope this helps you to cut that cost off guilt free :).
