POLL: En suite bathroom - yay or nay?
Comments (78)An ensuite to the master bedroom is a great asset in a family home, reducing the morning stampede to the family bathroom. It also helps create that sense of luxury, adult space. A sanctuary away from the rest of the family....See MoreExtension ideas
Comments (10)Thanks for the above- some really good ideas for us to look into. We've actually already knocked through the kitchen and dining room, and utility with a glass block partition between kitchen and utility. The conservatory should be the best room in the house, overlooking the garden and koi pond that I've just built, but its obviously just standard upvc and gets limited use. The orangery idea really appeals, and would create our second living area that we really want. Wouldn't really want to convert the existing lounge but I guess one option to look into is rather than trying to get a two storey extension, if this simply isn't going to work, is just do a single storey extension out to the front porch area perhaps and side to create a master bedroom. This would also have the benefit of overlooking, and opening out onto the garden. A house on an adjoining road has done something similar with vaulted ceiling and looks really smart. Floor plan like this (but rather than sun lounge and utility it would be master bedroom and en suite: Still not sure how the roof of any extension would tie in but guess this could be overcome somehow. Then we could look into other ideas as both of you suggested upstairs to open it up a bit but without large scale changes. And as you say could all be done over a period of time rather than all at once which would appeal...See MorePlanning new bathroom and ensuite Argh!
Comments (19)I'm not moving or building walls, or knocking through doorways until I'm sure what I want. Living in the house while remodeling it is quite a challenge. There are very differing opinions around what size the bathrooms should be here too. Having only one door in the bedroom has massive advantages where there is no door right next to his side of the bed being a superking, and also having no door there means that any other bed, even a king could be moved to back onto that wall, tv opposite wall etc. As a main bedroom with a double bed, there isn't room for a wardrobe due to the window size, those drawers are all we have, and the rest is in suitcases ...hence my insistence of taking a chunk out of the room next door to accommodate us.... more on shelving and shoes than hanging space though. There only really needs to be a decent shower for my husband in the en-suite and carry out the "three S's" on a morning. Plumbing worries me due to the structure of the house, so I'd like to try to make a common area eg back to back on the loos to help with what will already be a nightmare, however one on the external wall already may be a good thing. I want a good sized bath but not stand alone, I want surface area around it, none of this having to reach behind or to the end or to the floor for the shampoo and perching the soap dish on the side any more. At the moment, I take a little table and place it in the middle of the bathroom floor with candles and the tablet to catch up on shows, as this is really the only time and place I get to do that! The only time I see a shower cubicle is to wash dye out of my hair. Thanks for the sounding board and ideas, good to get opinions... I'll be back with something more refined taking all into account :)...See MoreExtension and layout ideas needed please!
Comments (28)In defense of my plan it is all about find a way to have stairs that rise all the way to the attic level and creating a slightly larger footprint so that there is enough space to justify extending upwards in the future while giving you 5 bedrooms now. The stairwell has a planned new window so would have light. The proposed plan to put a room on stilts above the garage sounds like you will be paying for engineering that could be spent adding square footage instead if you build out in another direction. In any case the garage is smaller than your current main bedroom and ensuite so seems like a master suite here would be a backwards step and you certainly wouldn't create a 5th bedroom in this space. I also think that my suggestion can be done in stages with the removal of the wall between the kitchen and dining room and the extension above now. When you have done this and bought a new kitchen and redecorated you will have used a lot of your current budget and will have a lovely four bedroomed house although it could be made into five by splitting the space across two of the biggest bedrooms to make three...See MoreLeo A
