Can this terraced house look prettier from the outside?
I do love the look of victorian houses but this one isn't the typical one, it doesn't have the pretty sash window and it's a dark brick. I'm thinking painting the window frames and a nice new door will do a lot but any advice on colours or doors? Would a creeping plant work? Preferably quick and relatively affordable fixes for now but would be interested in options for long term!

Comments (16)Personally I think that the issue is that the pebbledashed section is too plain and this is exacerbated by the fact that the roof here is higher than the original plan. In my opinion the solution is to create some visual interest in this area. If both you and your neighbour is replacing the porch a taller version might help. Personally I think the pebbledash looks like a lower quality product than the rest of the house and painting it would help lift it (as long as the neighbour also want to do it as half done would look worse). Ideally I would put a tall thin sash style window in the pebbledashed section but I recognise this might be inconvenient inside the house- but it could be faked by adding a window surround to the outside to match the stone on the bay....See More1980s bland Terraced House desperately needs kerb appeal (front&rear)
Comments (18)Whilst the black frames of your neighbours looks good, if you don’t want black, I would go for a mid grey on all window frames and doors front and back, including the garage door. This will look good in between your neighbours properties. If budget allows I would recommend replacing the front door as it’s dated as far as kerb appeal goes. Try a contemporary door with some glazing, in the same grey as the windows etc. Then add plenty of colourful pot plants, as others have mentioned, as much greenery as you can fit in. If you can replace the roof at the rear porch area that would be worth doing, or a damn good cleaning if not and then I would create some interest in the back garden with planting trees and shrubs within the garden space, not just down the sides of the lawn, diverting your eye to various places and giving you some privacy from the road at the same time. Have a look at some garden plan ideas on Houzz for inspiration, or speak to a pro garden designer, it can actually save you money paying for a garden plan, it stops you making costly mistakes. Comments (28)Hi - congratulations on your new house in our beautiful city! Your vestibule glass is stunning and if you like it as much as I do, I would consider taking design direction from that .... it will subtly remind you of/prepare you for that 'wow' factor as you approach your home. I wouldn't lose the external door if you value the heat retention/security, but you could change it to the style of the inner door, which will also add light. Mostly I would concentrate on using elements of those colours from the vestibule glass on the outside of your home - namely the yellow, deep red and black. I love Bristol painted houses, but if you want to keep to a neutral paint on the render then just experiment with ways you can use these colours as accents, eg door colour or detail on the door surround, dark window cills, dark brick red or nearly-black path, and definitely planting (especially the LHS of the path & RHS of the door). Depends on your budget but I'd recommend tiling the front step, and then maybe save money by using concrete paint on the path. 3 years agoSome nice planting out the front and as said above paint the windows in a white or cream with a nice colour for the door (It could look very nice in a gloss black).
I'd also change the knocker on the door for a good brass number with a door bell to the side (Looks like there is one anyway) as the knocker looks very dated and generic now (Or you could keep one but find a nice reclaimed one).
Looking forward you could have the ground floor rendered to look like block stucco rather then brick and maybe when you change the windows go for a three bay?with a 1/2 wide in the middle and 1/4 at each side a bit like the window at the bottom?
Also, the front wall is a bit...dissapointing, you could paint the top bricks to pick them out or add a low fence / hedge could look nice even if its in pots, and never underestimate the power of a nice iron gate!
