Advice for a welcoming hallway

hello, thanks in advance for helping. I'm at the very early stages of planning to decorate my hallway. It's odd in that the old door (to left as you come in) has been blocked off, so you walk down to the back of the house into the back hallway and then go left into lounge or right into kitchen. Feels a bit like a corridor. Interested in how to make it more welcoming.
I have wondered about removing the middle door - but then need to think about the back door as this becomes what you look at when you first walk in. I wanted to make this a glass door for light and so you look out at the garden but I think this would compromise privacy. Maybe a lovely curtain over the door in the winter to make it homely?
Any thoughts would be appreciated!

I think essentially the issue is that the front door leads to the back door! Wondering how to get around that without knocking down walls (have considered and ruled this out)

I would put back the missing door. It will make the house flow much better. It's likely to have been blocked up with a couple of sheets of plasterboard so wouldn't be much effort to remove.

Regarding the front door facing the back door I personally like the idea of being able to see through the house to the back garden from the front door, but if it's not appealing to you then maybe consider moving the back door? Hard to make a suggestion without floorplans but usually swapping out a rear window with a door and the current door with a window is not a huge task as the structural elements, i.e. the lintels, are already in place.

Is there room for a socket either side of the radiator ( hard to tell from pics). You could then add the shelf with slim table lamps or a radiator cabinet. In terms of the ŵall lights, there seems to be a blank ŵall opposite the cupboard under the stairs? For a light by the front door, (if you do need one there) I think it would need to go over the small piece of ŵall where you have the house keys otherwise the door won't open. There are loads of nice ŵall lights around now so size shouldn't be a problem. I'm not sure of your taste in lights else I would suggest some as I love a feature light especially for a hall! If you want something simple you could look at the up/down lighters. I think you can get ones to paint in the ŵall colour. The only thing about a striped carpet is the lines may not match up on the turn so would speak to the carpet company first.

It's lovely and big! I think the problem is that it doesn't seem to have any purpose. I would put a narrow table or cupboards under that lovely mirror where the upholstered chair is now, with a plant on it and some nice ceramics. That would be a good place to keep keys etc and you could put gloves and scarves in the drawers or in baskets next to it. You could consider papering one wall with something quite bold. Do you hang coats in the hall? The upholstered chair would be a good place to sit and remove or put on outdoor shoes and boots, with baskets or a shoe rack next to it. Some art work on the walls, more plants and a rug or runner would finish it off, and make it look welcoming. And you'd still have room for the playhouse!

Hi nchavda88. It's hard to tell without a floorplan but what do you plan for above the ledge? Is that where the mirrored cabinet would go? Could you have an interesting cupboard in the corner to the right of the window? Or some cabinets between that corner and the radiator? An expanse of mirror makes the whole thing look bigger and feel more open - as I've found in my tiny bathroom and my tiny shower room. I've got storage underneath, forming a ledge, as part of a run of built-in furniture into which the loo and basin are set. It's very sleek but the tiles I've chosen add pzzazz and the mirrored wall above the ledge allows for a really open feel.

I have a purple front door, there are bells that jingle to say people are here, it is tidy and light and I always have incense burning there so it smells lovely.

Your hall is a typical hall. Front doors that lead to the back garden seems to be a popular choice. On tv last night, Your Home Made perfect featured a hall that the owners hate which was altered but they had plenty of space. I can’t really suggest a change as I think your hall is perfectly adequate?

thanks for this, Sonia. I think my worry is probably about the overall flow as the front to back hall is like a corridor and then there is a long living room in parallel to the left and a long kitchen to the right. so opening up the old door might help. but then again colour on the walls with pictures, a mirror, nice flooring and an attractive coat and shoe rack might be enough! hard to imagine how much decor will change the feel. I'll check out that episode and also have a bit more of a think. thanks very much!

I would love your hall, mine is so tiny so two people standing in it is one too many! Imagine when it’s painted, dressed with mirror and console table maybe, and shoe rack of course 😊 it will look amazing.
